If you read his account, this is not what happened. The cord whipped into a knot which tangled his hand, and he was able to pull his hand back and almost get free... but the tip of his ring finger got caught as the knot tightened and it twisted his finger off.

I've read 2 pages of posts about this accident, and the thing that strikes me is how judgemental a lot of you are toward this guy. Who knows... maybe he is a ******* doing ******* things... and maybe not. Maybe it went down as he described, and it could have been ANY ONE OF US if the timing and conditions were right. I, for one, have never entertained the thought that a drill cord could do something like that - I've never seen any safety warnings about that sort of thing, and I SERIOUSLY doubt many of you have either.

Whether he was a ******* or not, it would be in ALL of our best interests to stop pointing fingers at the guy or speculating about whatever error he might or might not have made... and instead consider the power and unpredictability of some of the tools WE use, and how WE might be a bit more cautious and alert when using them.

We don't know that.

I have a dewalt jig saw at work, the trigger lock button is placed in such a way that I pretty near each time I use it lock the trigger on. I know its there, but the ergonomics of the handle dictate how I hold the thing, and most times I end up locking it on. Extremely annoying. Back around 1990, had a makita hammer drill, trigger lock was a small knob on the trigger, this drill was well used (daily use hammer drilling) and the trigger lock, depending on which hand you happened to be holding it with would lock on as well with ease. Stupid design with the trigger lock on the trigger.

In this guys case, when the drill got away from him, did he inadvertently activate the trigger lock during an attempt to keep control of the tool? Quite possible.

Alex.
