I am currently in the process of building a shop and a shed with metal exterior coverings so using a drill often.

I have a porter cable 18volt now but one battery is shot and the other doesnt last as long as it should so instead of buying another battery I thought I would take that money and put towards upgrading the now 7 yr old drill that has been great.

I am looking at another rigid

the x4 impact/drill/radio combo

any better suggestions? In the need of one asap and heading to hd today anyways

the ridgid is nice, because they have the lifetime service (never used it so who knows if any good.

I have used Bosch and Dewalt tools with much success. Im currently using a portercable set thats badass, but after using my fathers Bosch 18V set, i wish i had gone for a few more features...

A few hundred I guess.

I hadnt planned on getting a new one so soon so I havent been doing any research. I was using the FILs dewalt but he came and got it back yesterday and its hard to work with on only 1 battery when it lasts about 20 minutes

I recently bought the same Ridgid set you are looking at. It replaced a Craftsman 19.2V that the batteries had got to the same point as your Porter Cable. They would last long and wouldn't hold a charge over time. After only a couple of days without use the batteries would discharge. I haven't had much opportunity to use the new Ridgid tools yet so can't speak much to performance from my own experience. I decided on Ridgid because of the LSA that replaces batteries.

Most homeowner do NOT need the "professional" level cordless power tools.

Milwaukee 12V non-Fuel 3/8" drill and 1/4" hex impact driver are a good combo. Take the money you saved and buy an extra battery or another tool. I also believe, if you need a drill, get a drill; not a hammer drill and not a drill/driver. A separate impact driver is much better !

They had an awesome sale for the pair at Christmas. I'm hoping it come back around !

IMHO, for a homeowner, if you need something more "heavy duty" (1/2" drill, 1/2" impact) buy a CORDED tool !

Yep. Got my brother that set for Christmas. Really wish I had bought myself one also.

I have mostly DeWalt stuff so I can have several batteries to choose from. Dad likes his Makita, if I was starting over I would probably go Makita, but I am not so I keep adding DeWalt. They have been good, comfortable, parts are easy to get, and I still have all but the first one I ever had, it was a 12v (I sold it)all the rest are 18v

For the warranty I think I will go with the rigid, has good reviews. I did see where the ryobi batteries were like 10 or 20 for 2 in the hot deals home depot thread. If I can stumble across those I will buy several of them and the drill/impact combo and live with the ryobi with more batteries

Well I went into HD this afternoon to pick up the Rigid X4 combo. The website showed they had 2 in stock but an employee said they were both display units to start with and they did not know where they were. They were also out of the drill/impact only set.

I was frustrated because I had my mind made up about the Rigid and when he stated they had none I had no back-up plan. Luckily today was my birthday and the wife was very patient while I made my mind up on what to get.

I looked at the Ryobi and almost bought the combo kit that included the sawsall, skillsaw, flashlight and multi tool for $299 but I felt as the quality was not what I wanted.

I settled on the Dewalt. I say settle. I really really liked it but it was more than I wanted to spend. The wife talked me into it.

I also came across this site while following the wife through Wal Mart pushing the buggy.

I am going to try this when I get time. I figured I could always use a spare drill

That's a nice DeWalt package you got there. My cousin is a contractor and has that set. I've seen him drop it accidentally 5 or 6 feet off ladders, and it still works well.

I have a I guess more of a consumer-grade Ryobi impact driver, drill, recip, and circular saw kit. But the impact is pretty powerful (1600 inch pounds). Drives large fasteners easily.

I liked the Ryobi because of all the tools they had for the batteries and it likely would have served me well but I am very hard on my tools sometimes. If I can get 7 yrs out of this I wont feel so bad about the extra expense it costs me.

I'd return the Dewalt set and pick up the Rigid set for $139 from the website.

That is the set I went in to get. They are out. I needed an impact ASAP to finish my 40x40 and my wifes shed that I am picking the metal up for in the morning.

I may order that set as well and if the Dewalt is not that much better return the Dewalt or just have another drill set. The Dewalt is beyond awesome though.

I got the Milwaukee combo for $100 brand new from a guy I met on CL who buys tools by the pallet and sells out of his house. There's some good deals out there!

I totally undertand the "need it now" circumstances. I think you'll find that the Rigid set is on par with the Dewalt set, and has a better warranty. If I hadn't moved up to Milwaukee Fuel before they dropped the price, I'd own two of the Rigid sets.

That is an awesome deal. I didnt look at them because they were more than the Dewalt and I was already spending more than I wanted.

I've got the Ryobi. I bought my first one used. This was back when NiCAds were king. The Lithiums weren't even a thought. When the lithiums batteries came out they worked in the older "blue" tools and the rest is history. I've got several drills, impacts, hammer drill, reciprocating saw, .... They work just fine.

My buddy bought the Rigid a while back. It's solid and when we are both running the reciprocating saws the batteries run out about the same time.

If you're going to drive screws very much make sure you get an impact driver. You can drive the screws easier and faster. ...and pick up a set of impact driver bits (black ones). I keep breaking the non-impact ones.

Yeah the non-impact bits are junk. I have a set of Ryobi drill bits, and broke 3 or 4 just building a small gate here at my mom's house.

My Ryobis are the newer radioactive green (puke green). Gotta love the different colors. It's almost like motorcycles -- Yamahas were yellow, Suzukis orange, Hondas red, and Kawasakis green. Now Ryobis are green, DeWalts are yellow, Ridgids are orange, and Milwaukees are red.
