After cleaning out my drill bit drawer I quickly realized I need a better solution for quick access to common bits.

Thought about doing the basic pine block with holes, but what fun is that, plus what about my other odd balls, counter sinks, chamfer, pilot, etc...

Came up with this, top block made of Iron wood aka Ipe for twist 64ths, mag strips for versatility, mostly countersinks and pilots.
And finally my Hout inventory box.

Still need to clean out my main drawer, but this collection is what I reach for 90% of the time.

Nice. I like the magnetic bars for the countersinks.
I have all of mine in Huot index’s.

I went with the Vevor cabinets but only have 2 (so far) but I still keep one main 115pc set in the flip up box style for grab and go. If they get dull I swap them out and put the dull ones aside for re-sharpening.

This is my main drawer for drills. I personally hate having a bunch of organizers I gotta go thru so I made this. Nice to just open a drawer and grab a bit. The Huot stuff grant has above is really nice, had those in a few shops.

Thanks for posting pics, what organizers are you using?

Can you post some pictures of your Vevor cabinets? I am not familiar with them but have been considering a Huot.

Wow! Awesome set up!

I don’t know what it is with me though. Most guys covet other men’s houses, yachts or even wives, but I get envious about someones drill bit storage…!

Did the blue index’s come from Huot as blue, or were they painted?

I bought all of my Huot index's used, for around $100. The blue ones came that color and are original. I have never seem them for sale in that color tho. but Its nice having them in blue, as I use the blue ones for my wood specific bits. (Forstners and Bradpoint)

The remaining 7 cabinets hold, my metal specific bits; Fractional, Silver Deming, Number, Letter, Metric and Left Hand.

I really like this setup. If my Huot cabinets where not full, I'd like to go this route, but It would take too many precious drawers!

I had no idea Vevor made drill cabinets. Curious as to the quality. I might need to look into them for Endmills, etc.

sorry I should have said this but I made them myself. I also have ones for my taps and reamers too.

Nice. I might need to steal this idea for my mills.

I like to keep my taps, thread chasers and dies all together by size.

I do like your method better, for the reamer storage, and id like to adapt it for my mills, but not sure if it will be efficient enough on space / give me room for the sizes I have several multiples of.

Countersinks, Counter bores, reamers, etc.

Inserts, this drawer and the rest of my drawers with chucks / collets, etc are a **** show.

At least the rest of my machinist tools are a bit more organized.

So first I will say that Grants and Trytochaseme's setup give us all something to aspire too.

My 2 little Vevor cabinets are my first building blocks. They look pretty much identical to the Huot but seemed less expensive. I got them both from Amazon warehouse deals. Both were listed as like new but one was missing a rivet so I popped one in as it wasn't worth the hassle of returning.

I am one of those guys that can't throw away a dull bit but kept buying more. I finally bought a Drill Dr. And tuned all the old ones up. I went with the Vevors because of the multiple cases I had and storage containers of the old dull bits.

I don't have any pics on the phone right now but here is a link to one of them. One thing to note is they are all the same overall dimensions. The 3 drawer ones will have bigger slots than the 5 drawer but both take up the same space.

Wow, what an awesome deal!

Superb setup you have. Maybe the best I’ve seen!

I’m very tempted by the Huot cabinets, but in my shop I have such a mixture of Imperial and Metric that I like things colour coded. Sounds **** but it really helps. I like the way all the cabinets have the same external size. I never realised that.

I have quite a lot of countersinks and counterbores too, different grades for different tasks and multiples of the popular ones, so it would be good to include them.

I’m generally pretty organised, but drill bit storage just evolved and was never planned!

I’ve got a cabinet in between two of my drill presses. There are a few small Huot boxes there and a few small extra just open bins with random extra bits thrown in.
Wall hung storage bin/bins mounted on the wall for numbered and letter bits.
I’ve always kind of wanted one of these open easily accessible KISS storage things from fastcap.com 77883649-6C4A-44A0-B0A5-9D15B23A1BD5.jpg
This would work well for me at home. I work at a fab shop and I know most of the guys there would never put them back in their correct spot without the proper sized index hole. They have a hard time putting them back correctly now even with the proper sized holes to go by!

I just use a series of normal Huot drill indices for my twist drill sets, bringing new drills in from bulk storage if I damage a drill beyond what I can fix with a grinder. Where I've gone in a different direction is in my taps and tap drills. I made a stand to hold the tap drill, clearance drill, and counterbore drill for all the common tap sizes. This is extremely convenient for a lot of the quick-and-dirty fabrication work I tend to do as they're by far my most used sizes. I also made a highly comprehensive tap rack so I don't have to go digging when I need a less common type of tap.

Tarmy, couldn't agree more - here's some shots of my nearest "work area", room is 8x10 - used for smaller welding projects, drilling, small band saw, bench grinder, basic (oldest two tool boxes circa 1964-70 - not seen near right on last pic, Snap-On KRA-59), etc) - there's more in other areas, but NUTHIN quite as **** as the above :( ...
