Where do you keep your drill press chuck key? I'm looking for some clever ideas so photos are appreciated. Mine seems to walk away at random.

I use one of those magnetic ring holders and just stick it to the housing on the drill press.

At work the key is chained to each DP, otherwise it would get lost in the first few hours of its life! At home, I'm the only one to use the DP, so the key lays in recesses of the DP table and doesn't walk away. I don't like them on chains or cables, and I don't lose or misplace it, so I don't have a holder for it.

I use one of those retractable key chains. With a constant pull on the chuck key it helps keep me from flipping on the drill press while still in the chuck and tossing it across the garage landing somewhere never to be found again.... not that I have ever done of course....... ;)

Great ideas guys. I particularly like Givl Reggin's magnetic holder since it fits the configuration of my drill press. Thanks to all of you for the quick responses and I will keep watching for others.

p.s. to Duker: Been there, done that! :)

My Dad has 4 drill presses lined up in a row (he doesn't like to change bits). His chuck key hangs in the middle off a string. The string goes up to a pulley on the ceiling, and there is a counterweight on the other end of the string. Pull it down to tighten the chuck, let it go, it's always right where you left it.

I used a worm drive hose clamp to attach a piece of 1/4"id brass pipe to the upright tube of the press and stick the key in there. Never lost it.

I have dozens of chuck keys and at least a dozen drill chucks. If I can't find one I rob a key from another of the same style.

Efficiency in chaos.

I don't have a pic but mine is low tech, a boot lace tied on to the chuck key in a large loop. I then hang loop over the large adjustment bolt on the side of the head. YMMV.

I sunk mine into a wooden file handle... MUCH harder to lose that way (it's also how I handle the key for my ancient Black and Decker Model 1 1/2-inch drill).

On the drill press, I then put a small eye hook into the end of the key's wooden handle, and attacked it to a janitor's spring-loaded key ring cable... Lou the Janitor kept it on his belt with a belt clip like a tape measure: I keep it on the drill press column with a big hose clamp just under the head of the machine.

Pull it down, tighten, it retracts out of the way, and it can't ever be borrowed and lost.

I like the wooden handle, because it lets me get more even pressure while tightening the chuck.

I removed the two field magnets from a fried GM blower motor about twenty five years ago and stuck them to the column. They do a great job of holding a couple of chuck keys and a pump can with cutting oil in it.
