Drill press chucks through the years---different styles, etc?

I am mainly familiar with old keyless chucks I've found on a couple real old Craftsman drill presses, and of course Jacobs. Never had anything with a Morse, but am aware of them.

Anyone care to throw down some history on chucks in general; what became popular when, where, and why? I mean in the last 100 years or so, how have things evolved?

Well, I've only ever really used Jacobs chucks on machine tools - everything from a gorgeous little 1/4 inch I have on my smallest drill, right up to 3/4 inch on Herberts.

My Dad, well I inherited all his stuff and that was all Jacobs too. Ditto my Grandfather, so I reckon that's the best part of a hundred years, and all Jacobs!

Suspect it'll be the same for the next hundred - oh wait a moment - some ****** shut down the factory and thinks I'll pay the same money for some ****** Chinese imitation of a Jacobs chuck! Wrong again!

Looks like Rohm are going to be the biggest winners over the next century!
