Well, I went to pick up a metal brake from eBay and the seller mentioned he had a drill press he was thinking of listing as well. It's a Boice Crane, but I'm having trouble finding a model number. It ran well, runout seemed good, and it was quiet. I gave him $100 for it. Anyone give me any more details on this old girl? Thanks!

Nice find. Wilton made those. There are some very pricey Wilton branded drill presses out there, but I don't know how they compare with the Boice Crane units.

Not bad at all for $100! Looks to be in fairly good shape and not something you see everyday. Thanks for sharing the pics!

FWIW, I was told it was the other way round. Boice-Crane is the old line machinery maker and they made the ones on which Wilton put their name.

OK, so I finally got a chance to give it a closer look. The quill return spring is messed up. There is a spring present, but it looks a little mangled. Are quill springs fairly universal? My larger problem is the run-out. Guess I've bitten of a little more than I was wanting to chew on. What's the most likely cause here? Bad bearings?

Lock the quill and pull up and down on the chuck. Does the spindle have end play?

I don't think this one has a lock on the quill. I did hold it all the way up and felt for side to side play as well as vertical play at the chuck and felt none. Does this mean the shaft is bent? Thanks for the help and advice.

Quill Lock: Notice that the bottom of the main casting is split where the quill comes out. On the right side (facing the drill) there is a hole that goes through the split section and where it comes out on the left side it is smaller. I believe that the left side is threaded. There was originally some sort of stud or bolt that clamped the split section together to lock the quill at a given depth. The parts are missing, but you will be able to adapt something to do the job.

This ^^^^

You can make a quill lock lever with a longish grade three bolt, a nut bottomed on the threads and then bending the long section. (assuming sufficient threads reach the threaded side) cut off the bolt head and dress the edges. (you don;t need a full 90 degree bend on the bolt)

If that is too short in the threads, you can substitute a socket head bolt, and just use an Allen for deal with it.

And another way is to use some all thread, bottom it out in the threaded hole, cut off the excess, and use a wing nut, or just weld a "handle" onto a heavy pattern nut.

Hmm. That's odd...

I suppose it's possible the spindle is bent.

I have a 15" Boice-Crane supRtorque bench top press. It must be just slightly older than yours since Wilton bought out Boice in the '60's. Mine needs a quill and is hard to find. Bought at auction for $50 in 1986. Thought was great until I found it had no quill. Now I'm stuck. Contacted original company owner M.H. Buehrer and he had some parts but not a quill. I'll check my model number tonite but it may be different if is older.

Does anyone know where to get a quill for this machine? Someone told me that a Dayton drill press has the same quill…? Any thoughts?

I can't recall ever seeing a dayton DP. (plenty of motors and grinders...) since Dayton is a Granger trade name, if there was a dayton DP, it's probably contracted from someone else.

Eprey is your best bet. set up a search and let them tell you when Boice-Crane items come up...

The original poster hasn't been back here since 08-07-2012, so he probably won't see the new responses to this thread. ;)
