Drill Press ID Help - 101.03600

Hey Folks, I came across this DP locally and it was too reasonable to pass by especially since it had the MSA. I need some help IDing though since the front belt cover is casted as Craftsman but it has the Dunlap badge on the side. It's a 12 3/4" DP, 2 1/4" column. Crusty tag on the base stamped 101.03600 but I can't read anything else on it. 1/4 HP Century motor but otherwise it's all there, not missing any parts. So, is this a Dunlap or a Craftsman? Approx what year? I looked at the old online catalogs and didn't see mention of floor model Dunlaps. Thoughts? Thanks - Jim

Well, the paint on the pulley cover matches the paint on the head casting. The Dunlap badge has a slightly different shape than the Craftsman badges of the era. There is no unfaded paint around the edge of the Dunlap badge. If you get the Dunlap badge off and the unfaded paint is the same shape as the Dunlap badge, I would say the badge is original.

There is only one photo entry of a 101.3600 on VM, but it does not show the left side.

My swag is that it's a Craftsman with a Dunlap badge.

It would be 1941-1946, as Dunlap badged machinery started in '41 and Atlas drill presses only lasted till late 45/early 46-ish before they were phased out by the King Seeleys.


No evidence, but I'm of the opinion some of these mismatched machines during the war era possibly shipped that way from Atlas. A company making parts for the war effort wouldn't care if the badging on the cover and side of the machine matched, they just needed X number of drill presses as urgently as possible. Rather than wait on parts to build a "correct" drill press, Atlas assembled what they had and shipped them.

That is 1000000% speculation on my part, but this isn't the first mixed model wartime era Atlas/Craftsman I've seen where the patina seems to match perfectly between "wrong" parts.

But in the 70-80 odd years since it was built, a lot of parts swapping and modification could have happened across multiple owners. It's impossible to know, really, unless someone figures out that whole Delorean time machine thing

What is the distance between the panel screws on the Dunlap badge?
The distance between the mounting holes on the earlier 3D Craftsman badges were farther apart (2-7/16") than on the flat Dunlap and flat Craftsman heritage badges (2-1/4").

Thanks for the responses. I measured the distance between the Dunlap panel rivets and it's 2 3/8". The rivets/badge don't appear to have ever been removed and I agree, the paint on the head matches the paint on the belt cover etc.. Doesn't appear to have been repainted. Best I can tell , this is the way the DP was purchased. I wont know what's under the badge till I get into it and that wont be until it warms up here in the Hudson Valley. The pictures in the ad didn't show the base but I could see it was a floor model. I thought that maybe someone just swapped in a longer post but no, it's a floor model. This DP is smaller then my other 15" DPs but it's very cool. I'll ad some photos to Vintage Machinery when I get a chance. Need to get a correct motor and motor pulley. The MSA is nice too, was this popular for these smaller, older machines? Thanks again.
