Is this bench top drill press worth the price? If not what should I offer, or should I look a different direction?

Too much for that bench top DP. Many Walker-Turner presses require special bearings, and being as old as it is it will need bearings. $100 tops in the Chicago area. Having owned a similar DP I would pass and wait for a Delta or a newer Taiwanese press with slower speeds.

Depends on location, of course, but I'd offer $150, assuming good motor. That's a nice drill press.

No particular brand, just look for "Made in Taiwan" on the label. The ones I find pretty nice have the following features:

--Low speed capable to below 300 rpm

--Crank elevator for the table

--Built in light. Generally has a pair of rocker switches on the side of the head

--Removable 5/8" chuck with Morse Taper shank

Industrial house brands like Enco or Dayton in particular

WT does have good resale value if you need something right away.
You can always keep looking while you use this one.

I would shoot for $150 as well.

When you say special bearings, are you implying they are difficult to find or impossible to find?

Many W-T presses use extended race bearings of an obsolete size. I recall about 20 years ago having to order a set from a guy that specialized in W-T and the set cost over $60. In addition, I would be hesitant to buy NOS bearings that are over 50 years old as the shelf life of the grease is only a decade or so.

IIRC they're a mix of metric and standard in one bearing. Try this email, I bought my replacements from Jeff at Walker Turner Serviced Machinery:

edit, just saw this on VM:

or contact user wtsmllc on eBay.

It was $110 for new pulley bearings (including shipping both ways and letting him replace them to avoid damage to the pulley) and spindle bearings.

That's where I bought my parts as well. If you add $110 to an ancient $150 drill press, you still end up with a $150 drill press. I was very happy when I replaced my W-T with a modern press.

True, but it's much prettier. :)

I only paid $40 for my 15" floor standing model, which helped. Of course, it's still sitting disassembled in a box...
