Drill press pulley removal

Hi all,
Just wondering how the heck the retaining 'nut/disc' for the pulley shown is removed? I've got a pin tool and I understand the threads are reversed, ie, clockwise to loosen. True?

Is it ok to hold the splined shaft with a socket while I wrestle with the pin tool? A 9/16" six point holds the shaft but the big retaining 'nut/disc' simply won't budge. Are there any torque specs involved?

Any ideas?

p.s. - when I do get it off, I plan on replacing it with a nut.

I see no issues holding the splined shaft with a socket.

I think I either held the shaft on top or maybe when the spindle was down I had a slot to put a screwdriver through. Either way the nut was not on that tight, and yes IIRC it was a reverse thread.

One tip about getting that pulley off though. Mine was on a tapered shaft. At first I tried a puller and broke a little piece off the pulley, then I did some googling and found out a MUCH easier way. Simply stick a big screwdriver under the pulley between it and the drill press body and give it a little prying force upwards. The use a rubber mallet / deadblow hammer and whack the top of the spline shaft. I think I gave it two little hits and the pulley was free...

My ridgid drill press looks the same and I wants to take the cover off to get to the electrical wiring and change out the electrical cord to a real length rather than the useless 6 footer.

Update: I was able to remove the retaining disc with vice grips. The threads are normal, ie, righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Thanks for the tip on removing the pulley. A simple pry up with a large screwdriver did the trick.
