Drill Press - Ram Machinery??

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a drill press. I found one on Craigslist listed for $110.

Seller says it is a "Ram Machinery - Model 0016".

3/4 Horsepower motor. MT-2 spindle. Adjustable table. Accepts drill bits from 1/32" to 5/8".

I would mainly use it for metal. Can anyone tell me if these were good machines, or not? Good price? I cant find anything online for Ram Machinery model 0016.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's a typical Asian sourced drill press. On the plus side, it has a MT socket and 3/4HP, both can help with metal work. The round table is also a nice feature, you can clamp something to the table, and then between rotating the table, and rotating the table mount on the column, you can get centered under the bit easily. How many speeds is it, and more importantly what is the lowest speed? It's no Delta 17" drill press, but may do what you want just fine. If everything checked out OK on inspection, might offer $75. and see what he says.

Probably much slower than it needs to be for that drill press. Good old marketing triumphs

You can do better. The rust that is visible is pretty clearly stating the value wasn't much to the previous owner.

Good quality and good price but only 4 speeds and no table elevation. I don't like benchtop DP's but it's all personal preference.

It is a 12 speed. Not sure about lowest speed though. Thanks for your reply.

The import will be better for metal work, assuming the Craftsman doesn't have the rare 3rd pulley. The import also has light, and a table raiser. That rust would clean up very easily with a wire brush on a 4.5" grinder.

I like those old Craftsman drill presses. They're much better built than the import machines of the same capacity. I don't think you can go wrong for $40 if everything works. Especially if it has or you can find a Multi-Speed Attachment 3rd pulley.

As Zkling said, speed isn't everything. There comes a point when a light-duty drill press just won't do a good job. That usually happens around 5/8" - 3/4" in mild steel with a pilot hole.

Good, no great deal, I'd totally buy it at that price especially since the table does not appear to be full of holes like so many are.

In Massachusetts, that would be a great deal for up here. Assuming that the spindle is still true. As far as drilling metal, you would need the optional 3rd pulley to slow it down for optimal use. Those are hard to find, but I've seen them come up on ebay on rare occasions. They go for big bucks.

nine4gmc is just finishing up a restoration/rebuild on one of those DP's. You should check out is resto thread.

For casual home/shop use, it will be a nice addition to your shop. And will hold up better than anything you could buy at the box stores.
