Drill press rotates backwards

I purchased a WEN 12" drill press (Mod 4214) late last year and when I got it all set up I found that the motor was running in reverse. WEN customer service was very quick to respond and a new motor arrived within 2 days. I was told not to return the original motor so I now have a spare 2/3hp drill press motor sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

My question is, what can I make with a 2/3hp drill press motor that turns the wrong direction.

Best Regards,
Brian

If the motor is NOT reversible, mount a jackshaft on top of it and you'll have clockwise rotation.

Something like this pictured.....

Otherwise just turn the motor end for end, like you would, to drive a table saw in the right direction.

Welcome to the board!

I'd pull the wiring cover off each motor and see if the wire connections look different. If they are, then reconnect the reverse motor's connection to replicate that of the forward motor. Now you have a spare.

I bet Wen didn't suggest that based on liability reasons. Safer to just send you a new motor.

If you have access to both ends of the starter winding then it's just a matter of reversing their polarity (that is, you leave polarity of the main winding unchanged, but change the polarity of just the starter winding).

The problem is that you need access to both ends of the starter winding to do this, otherwise the motor would be considered non reversible.

You'll always have access to at least one end of the starter winding as it runs to the start capacitor, but the other end may be a common point (common with the main winding) buried deeper in the motor (like in the varnished "spaghetti" covered part of the windings).

But look under the wiring cover, you might have access to both ends of the starter winding there.

A buffer/ grinder / fan / tumbler/ rock bone crusher dunno most of those dp motor are hardwired to go only one direction but easily change over dual voltage and the connection are embedded inside the varnish and fiberglass tubes. 1ph Ac induction motor are not easily configured for variable speed though.

Belt sander. Power a lathe. Band saw.

Couldn't you do the same thing as you could with any motor - and since you're making the tool, you can choose the rotation by how you orient the motor to the tool?
