With a great USA made Wilton clamp no less.
My name is Jerry and I approve this set up.

Good eye! I just picked up a few of them from the scrap yard. I think I'm going to put them in the ultrasonic cleaner with some Evapo-rust and see if I can get them cleaned up decently. I'll probably run the threads of the screw across the wire wheel as well.

Nice work on the vise.
I have what looks like the same one. Mine came from a barn sale years ago and was painted Craftsman Power Bronze.
Last month I disassembled it for clean up. Between projects I like to work on the tools. I know it'll get grungy again but at least it'll be my grunge and not the last guy's. Any letters in the casting are illegible. It has a light coat of metallic champagne bronze so it's not the paint obscuring the letters.

The area with the red circle had a Craftsman decal. It was too damaged and beat up to save, even by masking around it.

Reminds me of this little guy.
Got it with some other stuff at an auction a few years ago. Had to go find it. Was in a drawer.
It does not have the provisions to angle it.
I have never used it.

I gathered these vises at garage and tag sales over the years when Long Island was a hub for airframe manufacturers and thousands of highly skilled machinists had home shops. Left to right, Heinrich 4"--USA, (aluminum jaws added by me) Eron 3 1/2"--Japan, Palmgren 3"--USA.

Can anyone identify whether or not this 8" Palmgren unit is made in USA or not? Considering buying this off marketplace for $100 bucks

I was wondering if anyone could identify this drill press vise. It came with a drill press I just purchased. Unfortunately the original owner passed seat and his granddaughter was setting everything up on Facebook marketplace. Just a few pictures of it. No badges or other cast markings besides those numbers.

Thanks

I picked this one up from the floor at a shop sale this morning:

The gal who was running the sale looked at it--the screw was hanging off to the side of the half-nut--and said "Honey, that one is broken. If you still want it, you can have it."

Seemed like a good time not to start an argument.

I've been keeping an eye out for a speed vise of some sort, and it turns out, this is THE Speed Vise!

Parts are getting de-rusted right now, after removing the grunge and paint. It has the DP vise equivalent of the "arc of shame" on the baseplate, which I'll attempt to fix by welding it.

Parts are still available from Penn, so if I screw up the baseplate I can buy another. It also seems to need some jaw plates, so I'll look into those, too. My 'free" vise may be getting expensive.

All ready for paint prep:

The baseplate has a few goof in it--not too bad--until I turned it over:

54418385294_942d89d359_b.jpg

"Oh, ****! Look what you did to Dad's vise! What're we gonna do before he gets home?"

Speed Vise, indeed:

54418439503_6f48163b03_b.jpg

The paint was on the line as far as strip/repaint goes, but I've had this can of the now-discontinued Rusto Hammered paint sitting around for a few years and felt like using some more before it went bad:

"Hides surface imperfections"--should be perfect for this vise.

It's ready for another coat.

One Cardinal 3B Speed Vise, mostly restored, in its natural habitat:

54418884605_3bb726a860_b.jpg

From fully closed to fully open is an instant, as it is a Speed Vise!

The color is considerably bluer that what it looks like--shop lighting isn't perfectly color-balanced. I'll get a natural light pic tomorrow.

Getting the half-nut aligned was fiddly, but I picked up a Starrett depth gauge yesterday that was just what was needed.

I think I'll go ahead and order the baseplate, but make my own jaw plates from aluminum--for now.

Just for contrast, here's the old Shop Fox DP vise that's been in the brewery shop for thirty-odd years, through numerous employees of varying degrees of skills and levels of shits to give:

54418708869_82b2701683_b.jpg

I count one, maybe two drill bit strikes--marks of shame--on that.

Cardinal sells the vise with and without jaw vises. I suspect 50% of the ones I have seen over the years do not have the optional jaw plates.

1743299519055.png
Yep, and very likely the way this one was used, based on wear and damage.

This style of jaw plate:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54418708869_82b2701683_b.jpg

Just makes life easier. $90 easier? Hmmm....

Aluminum plates would make for a more secure grip without damaging the part being drilled--and I have the technology.

You could have at least filled the holes with JB Weld to make it look better.

Well, I crumbled under peer pressure--actually, it was just too ****-ugly for my tastes.

I used Permatex Cold Weld as that was what was in the adhesives drawer on the bench. I did a LOT of draw-filing to get things relatively smooth again. Full story is in the mega vise thread.

Before:

54418884605_3bb726a860_b.jpg

Base plate, after:

54420588614_1ce0f8fe14_b.jpg

Jaws, after:

54420832449_4abfb4d416_b.jpg

Now to make some jaw plates from that piece of aluminum plate the vise is sitting on.

I'm 90% sure Kurt is still made up the street, I got one cheap on K-Bid but I think they have local pick-up only. I had no idea these are so expensive, I think I have a slightly smaller version.

Yeah, and it weighs almost 300 pounds!

I'd say you have a smaller version as well 😉

Just wiped down mine last night. Found my Grandfathers name stamped in it too. He’s been gone over 26 years, always thought this was my fathers.

This one you could put on your Drill Press…. Dug this one out of the scrap hopper at work. Had to wait for them to scrap the base too… works flawlessly if you care to lift it. Lot of love went into this. You can close the jaws on a sheet of paper and pick this one up..

Well, I know I wrote that the Cardinal Speed-Vise was done, but...

54627470713_8a925c4178_o.jpg

I took it to another level.

With this 22lb magnetic chuck upside-down on the bottom:

54627382998_9652202047_o.jpg

I'll never be fumbling for a clamp again.

It's rock-solid when locked down.

I could probably have gone with a much smaller mag chuck--and may still. I really had no idea how massive these things are!

-I should be happy for you that you found an innovative solution but it still makes me cringe to see the mag-chuck from a surface grinder on a drill press. Oh the horror...

I could have done "the right thing" and bought a purpose-made Magswitch magnetic vise base--for $504. This mag chuck cost $90. It's bulkier and higher profile than the Magswitch, but it only has one lever to operate--the MS has two knobs--and, for the savings, I'll live with it.

-I wasn't questioning your economics, it just causes a knee jerk reaction in me so it's my issue. You do you and I'll seek therapy.

The other horror is that I have a Suburban 6x18 magnetic sine set vice and don’t really have a good use for it. I think they are about $10k or more these days. Right now I am using the magnet section removed to hold flat steel plates when doing layout and marking.

One of these:

Yeah, $12K is spendy for a paperweight.

-I suppose it could have been worse. You could have made up a story about using it to go magnet fishing in the Detroit River.

Even better, I can use it for layout work with a happy smile as I only paid $20 for it at a yard sale. A man down the road a few miles from me died and his alternate state seeking son had a yard sale of the man’s tools. I was looking at it sitting on the grass when he saw me and commented that he did not know what it was but that it would make a good weight for something like a tractor because it was heavy as hell. I nodded and agreed, then remarked that I could not even pick it up if I bought it. His buddy helping him jumped right over and they both loaded it into my truck. Someone had made a lifting eye attachment for it so it was easy to unload back at my shop. It sat in my storage barn for around 25 years before I recently decided that it needed to work for it’s previously relaxing life style.
