Ok, I'm gaining some knowledge in regular vises, but I'm not familiar with drill press vises...

- How do they stay on the platform? How are they secured?
- Do they require those "slots" on the platform to lock into place?
- Do only certain vises fit on certain platforms?
- Who makes some good ones?
- What about tilting vises?

etc....

Another mighty handy device to have on your drill press is a Vise Grip specially designed for the purpose. It has one jaw, the other side has a big bolt for attaching to the table. Great for holding down flat stock, or anything for that matter.

I found a couple pics, one of a conventional drill vise, the other a 'vise grip' style:

The cheap HF-type bolt down via slots in the cast base. Other, nicer, vices (Palmgren, Wilton) are machined on the end and sides so they can be mounted in different orientations. Some have grooved sides that can be held down with clamps and studs as commonly used on T-slotted tables.

A step up from DP vises are milling machine vises, which are built much heavier and to precise tolerances. Kurt is considered a premium brand, but quite pricey.

I don't know if they make such an animal, if they do, it's probably lotsa coin, but I wished I could find a vise that both jaws move at the same time so that you can center it on the bit and center drill stuff repeatidly.

I have a cheap HF one, but I totally disassembled it, cleaned it up, repainted it, oiled and reassembled it.

I saw one like that this weekend. The jaws are on an adjustable table and it can be cranked right and left, forward and backward. I believe that they are called "milling machine vises". I also used a drill press today that was made in 1966 that came out of a machine shop. The table cranked up and down, was able to be tilted by a crank, and pushed from side to side when you loosened the clamp. It looks like it must weigh about 500 pounds, the steel is so heavy.

Most of the "cross-slide" vises these days are of "offshore" origin. Lots of backlash. You pays your money and you takes your chance...

Anybody have a idea where the vice grip type clamp can be purchased. Seems like a great idea for general everyday type use.

Palmgren & Wilton are two top quality vises . I bought the 4" Palmgren for around $100.00 and the 6" Wilton (WIL13402) Cam Action Drill Press Vise for around $245.00 w/ shipping . The big Wilton 6" vise is around 35 lbs.

I use the 4" Palmgren on the Jet bench drill press and the 6" Wilton on the floor model Jet drill press . I have been through a lot of drill press vises in the metal fabrication i do and the cheap vises just dont hole up , dont hold there mark and dont last very long. If your doing wood in a drill press then pick up a cheaper vise but when it comes to quality and performace then get the better made vises , there a world of difference.

Note: pack of smokes to show size , I dont normally drill cigs.

The Irwin Vise-grip brand # 11HD 11-Inch Locking Hold Down Clamp is discontinued and the only reference on the Irwin web site is the spring available as a replacement part. Here is a link to a company selling a similar (imported ?) product along with some other drill press accessories.

At the risk of diverting this thread to the working conditions of school age children in densely populated Asian countries, Harbor Freight has this one for ten bucks: see link.

Looks like it would be pretty easy to make one as well from a Vise-Grip Clamp.

Wilton makes one. I saw it in a catalog at work today, but didn't get the number written down. It was like $300, as I recall.

I have both the "vise-grip" style as well as one of Grizzly's drill press vises for $25 to match my 16-spd floor model drill press. Many are made in Taiwan but haven't had any problem. I'm not a machinist and don't have special needs except to hold the piece I am drilling. But Grizzly does offer a wide range of these vises. There's a self-centering vise too!
