Drill press. What do i have here?

New here. Long story short. I bought an old farm. It has a lot of history. There's a 1846 log cabin and a old garage full of old vintage tools. I'll start with this drill press. Is it homemade? Here are a couple photos. Could someone with some knowledge help me out.

Isn't it? I looked everywhere on the internet and nothing even closely resembles this. I was told the fellow that once lived here was a genius and designed all sorts of things and he had several patents on them. I'm a disabled veteran and there's things that need moved to get closer to have a better look. I'll have to get my son to move things.

I'm sorta thinking both. This guy could design anything so they say. I was told he couldn't stay away from the bottle or he could have made a fortune with his knowledge. I have more items of interest that I'll be posting in the near future. Stay tuned.

Thanks,gives me something to do. I need a new interest. I guess it's ok to keep putting up more pics. There is a lot more interesting toys yet to look at. Does anyone know what this is? There's a old wood level next to it. There's several of these levels I've seen.

A grinder like for coffee beans? Many types of hand grinders were made. You need to put something in it and see what it does AFA how fine or coarse it is.

I think that's a tapper. It would drill OK, but I think that it also auto-reverses on the upstroke when you are tapping a hole. The style Jacobs chuck it has also points toward it being a tapper.

It looks 'home-made', to be sure, with a motor/gearbox assembly salvaged from a washing machine. (the slow gear reduction was for the agitation of the 'wash' part of the machine cycle, with a shift to a faster speed for the 'spin dry' cycle controlled by the timer switch)

Its plausible that someone with basic welding/fabrication skills would have been motivated to build an improvised drill press like that during the 1939-45 war, when one had to qualify for a 'priority' with one's local war production board office, to be allowed to purchase even the simplest of machine tools.

If you couldn't qualify for a priority, your alternative was to 'improvise' as best you were able, with materials at hand.

Yes home made would be my guess as well.

OP you have a barn full of vintage old tools, could you start taking pictures of a few of your vintage old hand tools for us to have a look see.
