We had a lathe that was equipped in a similar fashion many years ago. Had a Ford 3 speed trans and a large hand lever to engage the clutch. What a pain.

Maybe, but I don't ever recall seeing a drill press that was designed to run in reverse.

My drill presses run in reverse, comes in handy tapping or for use with left hand drill bits. Probably have to be Ronnie Sox to shift that one fast enough though....

On that small of a machine that is a waste of floor space. On a larger machine it makes sense. Typically when people retrofit a old line shaft machine with a 1500RPM+ electric motor.

I've got an Avey which came with a '30s Mopar ******. It was a common shadetree mod to use the old line shaft DPs.
