Looking to buy a floor standing drill press. Looking for any advice or opinions on brand or models. More often than not I would be drilling metal, but this is for my home garage/shop. Who knows what I may have to drill at any time, but it’s certainly no woodworking shop. Budget wise I would be willing to spend up to $750 if it’s a great quality unit.

You want used USA iron, and with that budget I'd look at Delta/Rockwell, Clausing, or Wilton USA.

Yes true, but it seems all the times I’ve looked on CL, there’s nothing but overpriced rusty junk. I’m not much of a bargain/used hunter, and don’t want to drive all over New England looking for one. I do however understand the older US made units are superior, but I never seem to have much luck. I like new, but would love to find an older quality unit, I just don’t want to wait much longer.

I know, I hear ya. I’ve been wanting and looking for over a year. Found what might be a decent used one on CL, but the seller kept jerking me around. That’s the luck I seem to have shopping used.

Old USA 17"+ metalworking drill presses are the best but pretty hard to find in good shape. They almost always need restoration because the old bearings are usually in desperate need of service. Parts can range from unobtainium to very expensive. Don't buy an older USA DP designed for woodworking - it'll lack the speed range for metalworking and lack features like table lift.

If your need is near term, Plan B would be a 16 speed, 17" Taiwan DP. They're easy to find, relatively inexpensive and better then the new Chinese machines. Look for Jet, Delta or the gazillion similar no name machines. Most have table lift, table tilt, TEFC motors and a wide speed range appropriate for metal.

For the money on a new press, the Klutch 17in can't be beat. I spent $650 on mine and I see it on sale for $550 on amazon and I aint even mad.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EGB6RK0/?tag=atomicindus08-20

This same unit is private labeled by other brands for $900+.
I use it exclusively to cut metal, often time hardened aircraft alloys.

That thing is a beast! I remember looking at that one on Amazon the other day. I think what kept me from considering it, was the $170 shipping. Looks like it’s actually sold by Northern Tool. It’s still a possibility though. I have two local places I want to try first. If not, then this model is at the top of my list.

Yes very true. I like some of the JET models. A local dealer sells them, but it looks like the models they carry are labeled by JET as woodworking DP’s. Is this a concern? For metal drilling, isn’t it usually done at lower speeds?

I was referring to the earlier JET machines from Taiwan. The new ones from China seem too expensive for what you get.

For large holes in metal, you'll need a couple hundred RPM. For small holes in aluminum you should be in the 1000's.

Where in CT?

You might be able to find an old milking machine for that.
Even mills that are a little loose make good drill presses

Right next to Hartford, I’m in Wethersfield.

Buddy of mine bought a Palmgren recently and was very happy with it.

Clausing is making drill presses in the US these days, but they run about $5,000 new. They're all 20" models. Even the used ones are going for over $1k on eBay.

Yeah, I used to post on Team Chevelle quite a bit, before the stupid password fiasco, 72ragtop over there. Decided they needed me more than I needed them, arrogant morons that aren't car guys running it. But yeah, have a few Delta's here, could put one together with a single phase motor, or even a 3 phase with a VFD.

I just found a Powermatic 1150 drill press on CL that was built in 1974, but looks great for $400. Should be selling for $1000. Seller had it in his garage for woodwork. I'll be drilling various metals.

Ok, let me know, and if you have any model numbers or pics. I’m not real savvy, but I know some models I was looking at can draw quite a few amps. I’m pretty sure my garage outlets are on a separate 15 or 20 amp breaker. If you want, pm me and I can give you my contact info. Oh also I’m 70CHEVELLE396 over there.

That Klutch looks a lot like a rebranded Delta, pretty good #s, looks like a rebranded Delta but thats not saying much.
Add in that 600rpm isnt low enough for good metal capacity and I would skip it.

If you are buying new and staying under $750, look at Grizzly, same quality (or better) as Delta, Powermatic, JET, better than Baileigh. All of those are made overseas now, Grizzly just doesnt charge for the "name".

20" for $785 shipped

17" for $660 shipped

Agree with others about finding a older USA model on CL, but sometimes it doesnt make sense with either timing, whats available, or how much work you want to put in.

Any I have can be plugged into a regular 15 amp household outlet, no problems there. These are the DP600 models, HD, have a table lift, think they're 3-1/2" columns. Considered a light industrial drill press. Can get some pics next week. I'll send a PM.

Thanks, great info. I noticed the lowest speed on the Klutch also.

I bought a Jet and couldn't be more happy with it. Also if you shop around you could get something close to what I have in your price range. I honestly don't know how I went so long without owning a drill press.

I have a similar DP600, circa 1940's, and it is an excellent drill press. Mine has the slo-speed pulleys and suitable for most any metal work. Definitely worth pursuing.

If you're fortunate enough to find a DP600 from a fellow GJ member then It would be well worth your drive. They are awesome/full featured machines and will last forever. I'd opt for a VFD drive. A VFD on a DP is a marriage made in heaven.

Thanks to everyone for excellent feedback and advice. If I go used I will take the GJ member up on the DP600. If I go new I have a local tool supplier that has the JET JDP-17 716300 in stock. I really like this unit, and the price although at the top of my budget, isn’t bad at $695. The warranty is the best I’ve found, and I feel a lot better buying local vs ordering it online.

My present DP is an early model HF #38142 that I found for $40...just needed a motor and drive pulley, which I had. Am really happy with it and it goes down to about 200 RPM, perfect, as most my work is metal drilling.

So, don't discount those early imports. They weigh a ton and are well built.

Once again thanks to everyone for all the great information. Today I decided to pull the trigger on a JET JDP-17. I got a good deal from a local tool supplier. It has the features I like and the best warranty I’ve found. It’s more drill than I’ll ever need, but that’s never stopped me from buying something!
