I'm looking to buy a new set of drills for general shop use with my drill press. Mostly for use with mild steel or wood.

Is it worth buying a set of 118 bits in jobber length and a set of 135 split point bits in mechanic's length to generally cover the gammut of projects?

Or, should I be going for a set of 118 jobbers + a set of 135 screw length split points?

It looks like the screw length bits get more expensive in sets. I'm looking at the Norseman sets.

Go with the 118's. The 135's are generally split point and will cut easier but they are usually designated as a "tough" material drill design. They have a thicker web and it's tough to sharpen them if you can't do split points.
The 118's will work well in mild steel and are easier to sharpen off hand. If you pick up a drill sharpener that will do split points you can generally sharpen both styles. I have a Drill Dr. 750 and use both styles without a second thought. The 750 does split points so even my 118's have them.
