drilling lava rock

i am working on building a custom bird toy i picked up lava rock from clayton masonry but i get 3/4 the way throught it the either the bit shatters or the rock chips off and my work becomes usesless please help

Are you using a masonry bit? I can't see how you are snapping any drill bit, tiny holes?

The lava I have made "caves" out of for my fishtanks I used a BIG masonary bit and it worked fine.

yeah i get half way through and the rock crumbles they are small rocks and i am only using a 3/8 inch bit

Try step drilling it. Start with a small drill bit and then work your way up to 3/8.

Find small diamond faced core bit the diameter you need. With Lava rock you won't need a hammer drill.

what kind of lava.... it does matter, Its not all the same
