Drilling with an impact wrench

I would like to get an adapter so I can use my 1/2" mid torque Milwaukee as a drill in emergency situations. This will not be used around the house. When I go 4 wheeling I take the impact wrench and don't have space to also bring a drill, so if I can use the impact in a dire situation that would be a win.

Think though you maybe like a keyless type chuck for better convenience in a remote situation.


What about just using the 1/4 shank adapters made for impact wrenches and a some 1/4" shank drill bits?

Unless its really some heavy duty drilling your planning on

Agreed on 1/4" hex drills. Compact and good enough for trail repairs. You can also get 1/4" hex unibits.

One of the tool trucks used to sell square drive chucks and still might. MAC IIRC.

I've used both & have not had issues. HF use to sell the second one, but I am not sure if they still are available.

Would probably work for plastic but as soon as you try to drill metal a few hammer impacts will shatter any HSS bit.

I does take a certain amount of resistance for the impact mechanism to function when drilling with an impact tool. I have to admit I was bit surprised when I originally got an impact driver some long time ago and then learned people were drilling stuff with them too and not just driving screws

After a while I did get a few of the 1/4 shank bits to try with on my M18 drivers the bits bored right thru some dimensional building lumber just under rotation many times without even kicking in with the impact. Different with the smaller tools M12 tools. With those the impact went to work under the resistance load almost right away.

I've never tried drilling metal with impacts except for self tappers

McMaster has a keyless square drive Chuck for 77 buck looks pretty high quality too.

This makes no sense to me. Drill bits are very fragile. The impacting from the hammer on something like the mid torque might cause the drill bit to break prematurely.

Thanks for the feedback. I am concerned about the hammer impact. I guess i try it in the garage and see what happens.

I think I'll just go with the 1/4 shank bits and a socket.

i think you guys are forgetting that the impact on an impact gun is different from the impact on a hammer drill. Axial impacts on a drill bit should have no bearing on its strength compared to a hammer drill which is pushing the bit into the workpiece.

Yeah that would work just fine but Milwaukee also makes and square to hex adaptor then just get a hex to drill chuck. I have not used it with my mid torque but I have done with with a stubby. Works just like a normal hex impact just a heavier one
