a lot of sub $225K homes in this part of the country don't use them at all. Custom metal is bent to finish the fascia boards and that piece runs right up to the top of the OSB and then turns down what ever the angle of the finished roof is, by a quarter inch or so.

Looks to work as well as conventional drip edge, and supposedly cheaper and more water tight?

Why would you not use it?? It keeps water out of places it shouldn't be. It is easy and fast to install. It is cheap. It looks better. I will say I prefer the aluminum over the steel as it is much easier to work with.

Generally drip edge is use to cover the exposed plywood substrate as the fascia board doesn't cover it. That said if you use a metal or vinyl fascia you could not use a preformed/finished drip edge. Honestly as someone else pick up on in the previous drip edge thread if your roofing still doesn't overhang the drip edge by 3/8 or 1/2 inch most likely rain will run down the drip edge (by capillary action) rather than falling directly down into your gutter. If you drip edge is tight to your fascia (as you would expect it to be) then chances are good the light rainfalls will produce leaky gutters as the water adheres to the fascia board. SO be sure to still be certain the roof shingles overhang the drip edge or if you go with out a drip edge make sure the shingles overhang by 1/2" or so. My $.02
