Dripping tap

I am working on fixing a dripping tap set in the ensuite bedroom in a house I am renting.

It looks like I need to remove the black rubber cover/wall seal to get the cartridge out. They are old and hard so I think that means cutting them off.

Can new ones be bought?

I thought I had better know before proceeding. I don't want to end up renovating the bathroom, but the dripping noise is keeping me awake at night.

While I agree with kbs2244 I am wondering if the back of the shower stall is accessible? If it is then that faucet is easily replaced with brand new from menard for about $30.

I own rentals, call your landlord. Yesterday I replaced a faucet on a claw foot tub because it was worn out. It's part of being a landlord.

While I am a renter it is a private deal and I am living in a buddies house while he and his wife are off at school. As a home owner I am used to puttering in my own house, so I kind of miss it. Under a normal rental situation I would not be messing with someone else s house.

No, the back side of the shower is not accessible, and I realize that changing the tap set means a bathroom reno.

I was hoping I could take out the cartridges and rebuild or replace them. But the hard rubber wall seals will need to be replaced and I was hoping I could find them online as my local hardware store does not have them.

That is why the faucets are typically put on a wall with access from the other side. Even if it means blasting through some wallboard, it is no big deal to fix.

If you are the renter, call your landlord and let them worry about it.

Problems like that with the house you are Renting are their responsibility to repair, not yours.

The pic looks like a freestanding shower stall that would give minimal acces to the backside for faucet replacement but if not, ok. In that case, that black ring or collar is removable. It is a mounting ring and should come off. It may take some pb blaster or liquid wrench soaking but it is removeable. However, I believe it does not need to be removed. The faucet cartridge should be removeable without removing the mounting collar. Soak it in rust remover.

I am thinking that the collar would have originally been slipped into place and is a friction fit. But being 30 years old I doubt it is going to come out without snapping. This is fine if I can get a new one. How do you think this collar is attached? Possibly threaded?

I looked into the end of the tap thinking that maybe the cartridge would screw out but I could not see how. There are no flat sides. I was thinking that once I had the collar off there would be a nut to loosen the cartridge.

IT appears that there are 2 shower stalls back to back, the ensuite and the main bathroom tub. So it would mean ripping down that shower stall.

You better quit while you're ahead. Or at least give the home owner a call before you find yourself in a bad situation

Difficult to tell from your pic, kinda dark. I have been a handyman for 16 years and my experience with these faucets is there is a mounting collar threaded onto the body of the faucet on each side (hot side and cold side) but it is just for mounting. There is usually a faucet cartridge collar that is threaded on and once it is removed the cartridge is able to be pulled out. It usually has a couple tabs on it to make sure it stays located in the proper spot. I will see if I can find an illustration reference for you.
