Okay - my neighbor had my Drive Shaft re-worked and he installed it back while I was in ICU. We are going to pay him but haven't found where he took it.

So... What do you guys think this repair would cost?

2003 4x4 Dodge Diesel 2500

Damage:
Broken rear yokes (rear shaft section)
Bent Drive Shaft (rear shaft section)
New Mid Shaft Support Bearing

Drive Shaft was "reworked to almost new" is what he said.

Please if you know any estimates on this type of work I'm asking you provide your experience or opinions.

Thank you

I can't help you out with prices but would say you have one heck of a neighbor to have all that done and pay for it while you were in the hospital!

Its gotten so dusty in here, I think I've got something in my eye...

If you can't find the place that did the work, PM me and I'll give you the name and address of a top rebuilder and he can give you his price for that kind of work...

I paid $250 to have a driveshaft built for my jeep - it wasn't custom (they had a used shaft in the spares pile), but they did put new yokes on it and balance it. That was eight years ago I believe. Not the same, but some info is better than none.

Figure $75 an hour for labor and then google out what the parts cost.

I know a brand new CV shaft for my truck using Spicer parts will cost me $250 from Inland Truck Parts.

Perhaps instead of trying to pay him back, go purchase him something he may have been wanting such as a new compressor or whatever. Sometimes a gift is more appropriate than trying to just pay money back. Anybody can write a check but a friend will go through the effort of getting something special.

He is obviously a great friend and person for doing what he did for you. Give him something special back. Unless of course you think he needs the money back. But it sounds like he is not wanting to tell you what it cost so I do not think money is the issue.

Hope you are recovering ok.

**** damn touch pad deleted my whole post. This will be short hand.

I assume your driveshaft is a two piece with a carrier bearing? From your description of a mid shaft support bearing.

Broken ears on a 2500 shaft - $250
That's $75 for parts and $125 for the labor to cut and weld them in.

Bent shaft can vary. How bad was it? If it's real bad, they'll just replace the shaft.

The carrier bearing will cost about $50. With the shafts out it's easy to fix.

I figure for a 2500 Diesel shaft, to get an overhaul is about $500-600.

My custom 3/4-ton CV shafts for my rockcrawler were about $300 each. And they are much shorter than a trucks.

When I put the Cummins in my Ford I had to have the drive shaft modified. Had to have the transmission end switched over to dodge and all new u-joints carrier bearing and balancing done. That cost me in the are of $550 or $600.
