Driveway Base Question

I want to widen my existing asphalt driveway from 20x50 to 30x50

Eventually we plan to repave the existing driveway and the addition, when funds permit. We haven't decided on asphalt or concrete yet.

In the meantime, I plan to do the addition next spring with stone only. This will giver the parking I need and eventually we can pave over the stone.

So for a temporary driveway that will be covered in asphalt or concrete in 2 years, what depth and type of stone should I put down.
It's grass now so I'll rent or borrow a skid steer, dig then fill with stone.
Thanks

I would use "crusher run" with is 3/4" limestone "minus" meaning fines down to dust are kept in it.

If it were my job I'd use the geotextile fabric after cutting off the topsoil especially if you have clay and the subsoil gets slippery and gooey and just smashes out of the way after it gets wet. If its a sandy soil with better drainage and bearing when wet, then I might think about dropping that step.

The suggested 'crusher run' will make a good base and pack well. A foot deep to allow for drainage or frost depending on local conditions. Where I am located, 'road mulch' (3/4 minus) or RAP (recycled asphalt products) containing road millings and crushed concrete are often used as a base or the finished surface. The benefit of this type of material is that it will compact and can be graded when putting your choice of finish on in the future. I have a property with a long gravel drive and it gets a couple of yards of road mulch every few years as maintenance but is solid and will never be paved.

Thanks,
Around here they sell traffic bond in either 1/2" or 3/4" which includes fines up to either 1/2 or 3/4"
I used 1/2" traffic bond for a pad to park my trailer on and it's packed down crazy hard all on its own. I'd rather dig up asphalt than that stuff now.
Cost was $30/ yard delivered.

How deep do I need to go for the new area I'm doing?

I am in Montreal, similar climate.

I went 14" down after removing the sod, backfilled with 0-3/4", levelled it out then compacted and let it settle for 2 years before I put down the garage slab and new pavement on the driveway extension.

I recently had the whole driveway paved (including repave of the existing section. They removed the old broken asphalt, went down 14", back filled with 0-3/4" and compacted using a drum compactor & plate compactor.

For all the driveways I put in, or helped put in, we just dug up all of the top soil (6"-8"), then dumped in rocks and topped with road gravel or crushed concrete. I wouldn't think you'd want the rocks since you plan on topping with asphalt later, but I don't have any experience there.
