driveway base

Im getting ready to pour my concrete driveway soon and the concrete place by me has what they call washout stone that they recomended to use for my base for $7 per yard. Under my garage slab i used 21aa but it was $25 per yard and my budget is running out lol. Just wondering if anybody has any experience with using the washout stone for a base under driveways. The price defenitly sounds right lol

I'm not really sure what washout stone is but I wouldn't doubt it is a turkey grit size of round rock...too big for sand and too small for 3/8 round. It is often a waste product for S&G companies and can be sold for much less than other rock products. I have always prefered to use river gravel under slabs as opposed to quarry rock and generally liked sand best. Most any small round or crushed rock will work though, just get it compacted and really wet before you pour so it doesn't **** the moisture out of the freshly poured concrete. Ed.

If they recommend it and they will warrantee the pour I say you should be good to go.

so if you want it to pack hard get crushed

if you want drainage get round

Washout is likely actually washout from the trucks. Leftover cement aggregate from truck cleaning that is a mix of various sizes from pea gravel up. Since its mixed and they probably don't have a screen at the plant they can't reuse it in new batches and have to get rid of it hence the cheap price

Exactly ^ They just wash off the cement and this is how they recycle what's left over.

If this is just a driveway and you are not driving at high speeds - there's no worry. I have this under my driveway and it's been great. We've had loaded dumpster trucks and fully loaded garbage trucks drive on it (without permission) with no problems.

As long as you can (and do) compact it well, you'll be golden. I can't think of a reason to spend a lot of money for fancy highway grade gravel for this. (Unless it's a long driveway where you'll be moving cars at roadway speeds.)

From my limited experience I have to agree 100% with buddyboy.
I'm going with 3/4 road crush for mine its 3/4" gravel mixed with sand. Well compacted using a plate tamper and water. Yes wet it down before pouring as mentioned.

It only going to be 40ft long i will be renting a plate compactor to compact it. So i should run a sprinkler on it a while before i compact it?

The road crush is worth the extra in my opinion. I don't want cracks in a few years...
And keep it good and wet while you tamp it...
