Driveway expansion joints

Hi fellow Garagejournalers,

After years of living in condos and townhouses I finally moved into a proper house. My drive way has these gaps between sections that currently have wood as a filler. The wood clearly has seen better days , should I just replace with some pressure treated 2/4 ripped to fit? Or is there some other best practice. The driveway faces south and west so it gets a lot of sun.

You likely will have a hell of a time getting those out. I would just seal over the with a self leveling poly eurathane sidewalk selanent.

This has become common practice lately, I,m not crazy about the idea. They use pressure treated 1X as forms to screed off the concrete and just leave the wood in there. They used to use black asphalt fiber expansion boards, some still do on better quality work.

Mine looked pretty crappy for a while. Pressure washed the driveway a couple months ago and the wood looked like wood again.


I should have put a sealer on it then but I know for next time now.

I have a buddy who replaced the rotted wood in his driveway with Trex.

Powerwash the **** out of it. That will clean alot of the loose wood out. Then use the nylon filler and self leveling sealant.

I'd probably power wash it and cover it with some Sikaflex.
