I've got a turnaround area in front of my garage and a narrow driveway around my shop.
I had it graded and put down 57 rock (3/4")...about 6" thick. The weeds are killing me!
Someone suggested adding a layer of crusher run to top it off and hopefully suppress the weed thing.
Is this a good idea? I don't want to keep spraying Roundup every season.
Raleigh, NC area if that matters.

Round up only works on weeds that are actively growing. Seeds will not be affected. You need to put down a barrier type spray that kills for the season. These can last a year or more.

I'm way south - but my suggestions are "septic rock" 1-2" or crushed granite. Put down a layer of weed block in advance.

I used this on my gravel driveway in Fayetteville and plan to spray it every year. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rm43-glyphosate-plus-weed-preventer-tvc-1-gal It comes in multiple sizes.
I bought a backpack sprayer and started spraying. I've only done it once in the fall, and now have found I missed a few spots, so I guess it will get better every year.
My driveway is not regular gravel, it is "crush and run" which is made from ground-up concrete, thus multiple sizes including sand-sized particles, which makes for a tight, compact bed of gravel.

No rock will stop weeds. I’ve got 26” of well compacted 53s behind my barn that supports weed and grass growth.
Absolutely right.
Whatever you have at first will be clean for a while but will eventually get contaminated with dirt that blows in and then that dirt will support weed growth. I have a much smaller space covered with rocks and gravel and bare dirt. To keep the weeds down, here is my approach. I just wander around every week or 2 for a few minutes with a pressurized sprayer filled with generic glyphosate solution diluted down to 1%. Whatever is popping up green gets a spurt. Takes most of a week to turn brown. Don’t waste your time and material by spraying every square foot.
If you don’t want to wait, buy a propane powered weed burner. Be careful.

Airport runway and taxiway safety areas often have 3' of crush aggregate base course compacted to 98% topped with topsoil and grass. It has been found that 6" of compacted rap (recycled asphalt pavement) on top of the CABC will still result in weed growth, which is a M&O headache as they do not want to use a chemical solution, so they just plant grass and mow. Unfortunately, I do not have an answer to your situation. I would be concerned of gravel migration if a weed barrier fabric wasn't placed deep enough, but I maybe incorrect. It seems like an inch or two top lift of 3/8" pea gravel would make it difficult for seeds to germinate in and take root in due to the ease of of gravel movement, yet not too much movement when a vehicle passes over it. I'd want a 3/4" minus lift of gravel, well compacted, below the pea gravel to dissuade germination/root growth. My solution was a weed burner, as shiftless mentioned. I'll stand by to hear what others say. Good luck with your project!
