Driveway gravel

I'd like to know what driveway gravel drags the least bit of **** into the interior when doing interior work on a vehicle outside.

Currently using Crush and Run driveway and it's hell. Even after years, all that dust gets everywhere.

I hear that the 21A is the hardest surface to work on, but if it is dusty and I am doing tons of wiring in a vehicle I am not so sure.

I can't get anyone to show up around here to do asphalt work so gravel is probably my only option.

I would do a 3/4" or 1" washed crushed stone (no fines) with at least 2 fractured faces. If you put it down in lifts less than 9" and hit it with a good compactor (at least 2000lbs of centrifugal force) it will get nice and solid without tracking **** all over.

+1. This stuff binds well and with the summer heat & driving over it, my road looks paved.

I like clean #1 crushed limestone. It stays loose, but you will not track it and you will not have to walk in a wet spot.

This is very interesting. An unbelievably I found some on craigslist! Just having a hard time seeing what it will really look like. Google images isn't what it used to be. Ask for an apple and you'll end up with an orange.

Any pics by chance. Does it eventually become sort of asphalt like with the heat?

The problem that I have is that the driveway is too big to drive the car over every area. I could use my lawn tractor periodically I'd guess.

Super awesome! So this really won't come chunking up into my vehicles interior? I mean, how good can this get? I *almost* love it.

I just wish that I could touch these millings in a real world example to see how good this can get. Guess it *might* be time to call up one of these folks on Craigslist to check it out.

Sounds like the best thing since sliced bread. Dark junk in the interior of my dark vehicles won't show easy as the degrading crush and run I have laid around.

To simplify, I need to make sure someone has a good compactor and if they don't maybe go with someone else?

That being said, I have a friend with a tire store. He did his entire parking lot with millings about a year ago and it looks like asphalt now.

Since it is a specified road commission specification, it is available in many areas.

Once compacted there is little to track or blow but it firms up much better than the single sized gravels.

Much cleaner finish than what you are describing.

Across the 301 in the Fredericksburg area of all places. Don't find it too hard to believe, it can be a different world than yours. Thanks for the feedback....that sounds awesome!

Probably the same thing. I noticed they had the milling unscreened and screened. You probably want the screened, it would be more consistent size. This is the stuff you see when they grind off the top surface off RT 95 before they repave it.

That wont be much better than what you have now. The asphalt millings sort of "melt" together with heat and end up soild. Crushed concrete is just that and it will stay loose

Crushed concrete can be made to the same specs as crushed stone - where they sort out sizes and ratios as described above.

So it could work, the bugaboo with crushed concrete for an exposed surface like a driveway is it is very hard to get out all the metal...and your tires may find it.

Key would be from a trusted clean source, else save it for bases under other stuff.

My old man gets asphalt milling when they do road expansions in his area. He usually pays about $14 a yard delivered. That's a win for everyone.

If dust is your only issue, have you considered "chloriding" it? Buy a bag of Dow-flake and either mix it with water and spray it on - or - pre-wet the driveway and then sprinkle the Dow-flake over it and let it work. A little goes a long way. That's exactly what we use on gravel and limestone roads to keep the dust down and to improve compaction and stability. It's just salt - Calcium Chloride (as opposed to table salt which is sodium chloride).

Seems like a lot less work and bother if dust is your only issue.

Screened Millings! You don't want the chunky **** off the Milling machine unless its SUPER cheap! I laid 14 by 150 feet this past Spring about 2 inches at a time and rolled it with Garden Tractor and Roller. It got super hot here this summer which made it melt and pack in really tight after driving in and out with 2 vehicles all summer.
I loaded and unloaded Construction equipment on it and the Grousers on the CAT's rode on top of it never digging in like crushed concrete does. Of course there are softer spots that deform but a rake levels them out.

I went with screened Asphalt millings and it looks really nice. The thing (or possible problem) is that it was done wet and it just won't stop raining. Go figure, it hasn't hasn't rained in a month.

I paid for excavation and the ground is now level. I also had them use a large roller and it looks real nice.

Every time someone drives on it, it is hell. I get tire marks and some digging in. I use a manual tamper to keep things flat.

Will things harden up once things dry up a bit more and the sun comes out? Will I always get tire marks and will it ever be strong enough to park on without leaving indents?

Starting to feel like black gravel to me.

Hmm, sorry to hear.

I think crushed asphalt *****. Had it, covered of all of it. dusty as hell.
County dumped that **** on road that is on my property, took 2+ years to compact. This is with garbage trucks and daily traffic. Lost count of how many kids crashed on their bicycles....
Neighbor put some on our shared road. Been 8 months looks like **** not even close to compacted yet.
I am very happy I covered mine with granite, far superior in every way but price.

It will pack but if you're the only one driving on it, it will take forever.

Needs to be put down on a extremely hot day with a big roller and water. If it's still raining and cool - it'll take a while for it to tighten up. How thick is it?

Thanks everyone. Well it is actually hardening up now. A UPS truck made a delivery by backing in and no tire marks. Seems to be hit or miss as to what will leave marks. Seems like it is changing to a dark gray color now and its getting pretty darn hard in those (dry areas). Color is like dark crush and run now. I didn't really pay much attention, but I suspect it's at least 2 inches thick sitting on top of clay and crush and run.

Starting to get impressed. Almost there. Walked barefoot on it and I have really sensitive feet. It wasn't a bad experience.
