Driving me "nuts"

Like a squirrel my problem is finding the nuts. I am told the the threaded shafts on the grinder are done to the European or British standard of 12tpi. Meaning the nuts are 1/2” – 12 (British Whitworth). One is normal right hand thread, the other is left hand.

I have searched the USA over and cannot find these and if I do the companies require high minimum quantity or dollar amounts. Does anyone know where I might source these? Or do we have any European members? I would like to get two of each.

Can you find a tap (s) that size you could make your own fairly cheaply?

You need to go to a commercial fastener supply place. Often you have to buy a box for special order but a box may only be 5-10 of the nuts sometimes.

They can be ordered.

Otherwise you can buy some hex stock and make your own

"British Fasteners" are good I'm told

I have exhausted all my local shops. I really do not have the equipment to make my own. Plus the cost of the taps would be over $26. But thanks.........

"Maryland Metrics" is another good source. I've ordered work-related stuff from them. Not sure if they sell to non-commercial customers or in small qty's. Their website has some info on whitworth threaded finished hex nuts, but I can't tell for sure if they stock them. I don't see info about LH thread, but I'd give them a call....

I will see if MDmetric has them tomorrow. Thanks. What a pain in the rear to find these.

I've seen people sell them on eBay... Though I'm sure the price was kind of high...

Maybe find a cheap junker at a garage sale?

I wonder if you check the harbor freight manual for their grinder and can order them by themselves?

Someone told me the Harbor Freight grinders use that same nut. Seems to be a popular thread in China. I called them and they do not sell the nuts.

Don't even get me started; I understand your headache. My brother owns a triumph that I have hot up and running. I don't own any Whitworth tools, so I just randomly find a metric or standard wrench that fits the least loose to get the job done.

They want $26 to ship 4 nuts to me. The nuts are roughly 80 cents a piece. They tack all kinds of extra charges on.

Seriously?! What do you think they should charge you? That's a pretty reasonable price to import an oddball fastener, stock it for an unknown amount of time and then process an order.

Order 50 of each. The shipping will still be $26 and you will own the only stock in the entire country.

Not that I'm doubting you, but have you checked the threads with pitch gages to make sure you're not chasing some rumor on the internet? That is an odd thread for a grinder...

Otherwise I'd just "nut up" lol and pay the shipping on the ones you can find.

I'm glad you found what you were looking for at a reasonable price. It'd be great to update this thread with WHERE you found them, in case someone in the future has the same inquiry.

Even at $26.....could you make them for $26? Your time, effort, finding n buying the stock, labor.....all the time spent searching? I would have bit the bullet and wrote the check.

Jeesh... .85 each, four for $26, 6.50 each, settles on 4 bucks, calls others trolls, then won't share the vendor so others may learn and benefit.

Some people's kids!

The pony express probably doesn't run as fast as you'd like. He did say (5 days ago) that he would post the vendor when he received them.

I'm curious too, but I trust that we'll get the answer when the time is right...

Exactly. The pony seems to be walking. I do not want to bug the guy too much. I do not have the "nuts in hand" so to speak.

Finally they have arrived. Less than $5 to my door. I had to beg them to let me slide under the $25 minimum order but they were nice about it. Tough find but glad I have them.
