Is anyone using CFL's in the standard drop light. (The ones with a wire guard you just screw a light bulb into). The CFL's stay cool and are not so susceptible to shock as the old incandescents. The only draw back I see is the mercury content and the related warning posted on each bulb.
Thoughts and opinions............

Yes I am! :) I was surprised to find out how well they hold up to shock too. I use a plastic caged drop light; so that probably helps absorb some of the impact shock.

If you try this out be sure that the CFLs won't have any clearance problems in your drop light. The CFLs often have a large base that will not fit into some specialty fixtures. (They would not work on my garage doors either.)

In addition, the Mercury risk seems to have been exaggerated.

I have one in my shop light. It is a newer one and dosn't have the warm up time problem of the older ones.
I like it. Not hot. Not the harsh bright light. And seems tougher. I have dropped it a few times that I am sure would have broke even a "rough duty" bulb.

I have been using them both at home and at work. I love the fact that you get lots of light and very little heat output to get burned on. I have had several times where I used a small voltage inverter (12volt dc to 115volt ac) to use my light when no 115volt outlet was accessible. What the heck, 110watts of light for a CFL23watts used.

I bought the CF light HF sells for $8, its very handy, no issues except a "little" buzz I can feel when I hold it, but not a big deal. Next time its on sale I am getting another one or two for those times when more than one light is handy to have.
