Been a lurker here for some time thanks to a link from another Forum dealing with machine tools.

Since 1994, I have been restoring and upgrading an old farmhouse stacked onto a hillside back in 1828 surrounded by old sugar maples and a killer view of 5 ski areas. The farmhouse is part of an old property that was once over 150 acres and a local landmark if not legend.

The major buildings are framed in hand-hewn white oak in the post and beam fashion with harder wood pegs holding things together. Not only are they a stylish and handsome lot, they are ridiculously solid.

Thus began my list of projects such as creating a garage out of some spaces in the attached ell, major barn preservation including a new standing seam metal roof, new concrete footings and a replacement of the front 70' sill beam. We also run a small Christmas tree and wreath operation from the property.

Did I mention that I travel to NYC and Boston for work? Makes for lots of thinking time and cranial engineering BEFORE we bust out the tools. As a motion picture camera operator and Steadicam® operator, I have blocks of time for work and variable blocks of time for home life. More on that later.

Here's a look at the major components of the place: See Photos below.

I will start a couple of threads detailing both the garage work and the main barn rehab. What does anyone think? Let's hear it all.

Welcome to GJ, Firebrand. I love to hear how the old buldings are saved for future generations to enjoy. Thanks for taking on such an undertaking. Your projects sound great and I would love to see more pix of the homestead. The snow looks great from here in Florida. (I don't have to shovel it from here) Your employment is also intriguing. There is always someone here at GJ with an interesting job to throw a different perspective on things. Welcome and make yourself feel at home.

Now I have to move to NH. Do all pictures taken there turn out to be good for desktop wallpaper?

Thanks for the welcome and compliments!! Much appreciated. I will be composing a garage build thread in the next few days while the snow piles up some more.

Pretty much so, on the photos, since the farm is named "Magic Hour Farm." This refers to a filmmaking term (magic hour) for the glory light that happens briefly twice each day, once early morning and once late in the day. It is the only "quality of light" that is not capable of being reproduced 100% accurately by modern movie lighting technology. See below...This is one of the main reasons we selected this property! More to follow. Look for a garage buildout thread coming soon!

Welcome to the board.

But I'm confused...New Hampshire is still a state? I thought Canada took it over. :lol_hitti
