Dropping vehicles off lifts

I added hydraulic hose to mine and the motor and pumps is on the wall inside the shop door, still there a circuit breaker cutoff right by the motor too.

Mine is bolted direct drive so I couldn't do that if I wanted to. This lift is rated for 7000 Lbs but looks heavier made than some 10,000 ones I've seen at the shops I deliver to. :dunno:

Snow tire install went fine. Mechanic lowered lift.When reversing off he cut the wheel while still on lift..... I was right there but nothing you can do. No damage as it landed on the frame which has a full belly pan. About 12 guys came over from the car wash and got it back up.

So heres an interesting little tidbit that I have not seen addressed anywhere in lift maintainance.

The issue of the rub blocks wearing out !

When these inner rub blocks wear it canters the safety lock rails towards the outer ends of the lock dogs,

So much that there is a possibility that outer edge of the dog could crack allowing whatever is on the lift to crash to the ground.

My story is that my 10 year old lift that has given me excellent service had a vehicle resting on the safety BUT the car was slightly cocked - higher on one side than the other.

After much inspection I discovered that I could push against the inner girder (on either side) that holds the lift arms and move it almost an inch.

The rub blocks had worn significantly and had to be replaced.

Now lemmie tell ya - THIS JOB ***** !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The manufactor tells you to disassemble the entire lift to install the rub blocks.

I managed to do the job by only removing the top section of the girder and using a chain fall on the top of a scaffold to remove the inner girder and replace the blocks.

Took me 2 days and 2 guys to do it safely.

If your lift is over 5 years old I highly suggest checking the positions of the locking dogs and how your safetys are holding,

Saw one drop from full height at my last place of employment about 10 years ago. 2 post twin screw. The lift had dropped a couple of inches on one side when the main nut stripped about 2 weeks before, but the tech using the lift didnt mention it. When the safety nut went it dropped the car from full height. Luckily nobody was underneath it. Customer received a replacement car.

Ditto!

Although the ‘12 Ram I service isn’t great in the front - there’s barely enough room for the pads before the frame climbs toward the engine bay.

in shop class say 35 plus years back we had a 2 post in ground that lifted from the front and back, the controls were mounted on the floor-foot operated.

I kicked the control for lowering the front post with my back to the lift, the nose of the t/a was almost to the floor before I realized what was going on. thankfully the rear axle lift was U shaped and the car could not slide off the rear lift, it could have been ugly.

I've seen it done. A scary old design. We had them in shop class, and at the dealership I started at.
