TADA!

My 17 year-old finished his entry for the 4H fair this year, woodworking projects. It's a standing desk in the arts & crafts style. It features pinned or wedged mortise and tenon construction. Primary materials are hard maple and cherry with ebony accents. The single drawer is mounted on hidden soft-close sliders and has half-blind dovetails in front and through dovetails at the rear corners. The "pencil tray" is held in by magnets to make a semi-hidden compartment for valuables like candy bars.

This is his 9th year in woodworking. He passed me in skill level about 2 years back, mostly because he has about 10 times as much patience as I have for fiddling with details.

His next project is cleaning all the sawdust out of the garage. I hope that goes as well as the desk.

Phil

Great example of his art. He has a future in fine woodworking for sure. Congratulations to both of you.

Very nice and well balanced use of wood. I like it.

Woodworking and patience go a long way! Good luck on the cleanup. That's probably the hardest part of the project :)

I only wish I could make something that nice. The joinery is a great detail with the legs, the thru mortise and tenon with wedges, and the dove tail drawer.

Great job! Working with wood is one of the oldest professions. Your son is already a master of this trade. Next he will start designing his own creations. You never know where this might lead him.

I have more questions than answers.
So many positives in this. I agree with all the post. The balance and symmetry look fantastic. He has a very bright future weather as a hobby, job, design, etc. I hope you chooses as it a career. We need more young craftsman carrying on the trades. I thank the 4h for supporting and encouraging our youth and you and your wife for allowing him to grow.

Very nice. I have had a blast watching my son learn and build stuff with his own touches. Keep up the good work.
