Drum switch to instant reverse motor

Morning all. I need to wire a Dayton instant reverse motor to the drum switch on the lathe I am restoring, and the wiring diagram, along with the previous owners wiring, is throwing me off. I know the basics of how a drum swich is wired, and I know in theory what needs to change for the instant reverse - the solenoid needs to be hot whenever there is potential. But I am not sure if it gets wired to pole #4 or #5. The diagram on the motor is not clear enough for a non-electrician, and the previous owner wired everything with the same color wire, grey.

And these are the rats nest that is in there right now

I am pretty sure that #5 is the pole that always needs to be hot, but I want to be sure.

Thanks!

Can't help on the wiring question, but be careful when you "instant reverse" as you may jar the chuck loose.

Honestly, I think you have to let the motor coast down to a stop, then engage reverse to force the start winding to spin it the other direction. Flipping the switch to reverse while running I don't believe will do anything as the start switch has been taken out due centrifugal force while running in forward.

It turns out that Leeson had made many updates to that motor over the last 50 odd years, and the wiring diagram above doesn't match what is in the motor, as far as connections go. So, after a couple days of searching, I found the correct wiring diagram.

Now, I have a Furnas switch, but I included the Cutler Hammer diagram for anyone who might need this. The contacts are numbered differently on my motor, but if you understand how a drum switch works it is pretty easy to puzzle out.

Anyway, turns out I needed to order wire with an additional conductor, so now it will be wired with 14/6, to make sure that the ground is run properly. That should be here on Sunday, and we should be good to go soon after.

Thanks for taking the time to share the research information you found. Always nice to see solutions to these less than common questions when they come up

This was the case with the drum switch on my Logan lathe. If it was running, flipping the switch the other direction didn't do anything.

BE careful on having a Furnas switch. They have different models that have contacts connected in different ways when the switch is operated. That model number listed in the drawing can be different than the one you have and may connect different contacts together when switched.
