Dry Wall Mudders??

Hi Fellas
Well finely got the garage about finished. It is a 30x40. The dryweall guy came today and quoted me a bid of $930 to do the tape and mud work. I don't have a clue is this reasonable or not. Any pros out there let me know what you think.

Sounds like a good deal -

you may also want to take a look at this link and maybe print it out. It just lists out what the various standard levels are. It can cut out a lot of misunderstanding when you and a contractor are both on the page about what you expect them to do and what they plan on doing.

hmm...I would wonder about the quality of workmanship at that price... way WAY too cheap. In my mind anyway. would be looking for atleast 3-4k for that job...And I think that's a bargin. Oh, and 3-4k would be just the mudding not priming. Primer alone would be probably 100 dollars.

he already has the drywall, its just for taping, muding and sanding.
I would think that someone that does that every day would be able to at the very least do one coat a day, so 3 coats= 3days and one day to sand..........4 days tops

For a reference, my basement is being done right now. It's about 700 sqft plus up the stairs. Consists of two bedrooms, a rec room and a bathroom, 8' ceilings. I supplied the board (82 sheets of 4x8) and they boarded, taped, mud, sand, prime the ceiling and stipple. Quote is $2800 plus the cost of the board.

Tape, block, skim, sand. Basicly 3 coats + sand.
$930 is a good deal regardless of who is supplying the mud and tape.

If you can, get a referance from a recent job, ask the client "how's the work, HOW LONG did it take" Getting a job done in a timely manner is worth a lot, low bidders can't always do that.

$930 sounds a little inexpensive. If you've never done drywall before, it can be a challenge to say the least. Making it look seamless is the problem. I consider finish dry walling an art. Guys who do it every day make it look simple. If it were me, I'd would have had my checkbook out before he left.
Oh and if he's doing the ceiling, ask if it's going to be finished smooth or textured. In a garage I'd want it smooth. Textured is easy.

Mudding is a **** job if you are not a pro. I would do it myself if it was mine just for the practice and learning curve of it. But being the size of garage you are doing and the price quoted i wouldn't get my hands dirty.

That's a decent price. It roughs out to be about $.40/sq ft. I paid $.45 a year ago.

Is the finish going to be smooth? If so, much more work is involved. If he is texturing it (kinda like a stucco exterior on a house) that would be less work in the end.

After the first of the year I need to get some quotes on having my 30x40 with 12' ceilings taped mudded and painted white. I did all the drywall myself a couple of years ago.

I would think that texturing would be much more work than just finishing edges, screws and corners?

FWIW that sounds like a good price so long as his work is good.

I am finishing renovating an 1100 sq/ft house and I subbed out the mudding/taping. New walls in the bathroom and kitchen and massive repairs everywhere else (was previously a rental, plus had to level the house and cracked the drywall).

He charged me $800 and I was glad to pay it!

Good price, look at or call some previous jobs. It's too much work for you to attempt yourself if you have never done it. And yes some people will just about mud the floor from the spillage. Make sure your central heat/air is off and the intake covered to keep the dust from clogging the system. Same goes for anything else that might be in the area, the dust from sanding will cover everything, although if he is a really good mudder he won't sand much. Smoke/fire alarms, thermostats everything needs to be tapped off.

The guy started the job today. A little guy but he makes it look easy. After i thought about it a while I don't think the price is too bad. If I tried to do it it would take me a month and would look like ****. Besides duck season is just around the corner so I want to get it done. When water fowl season is in every thing else shuts down for me. It's an addiction.
