Drywall Before Garage Door Install?

Do people usually have the drywall done before the garage door is installed? My contractor is telling me I need to wait until the garage is in before we drywall? I don't know if that has something to do with it being winter or what?

Use strips pf 1/2 inch plywood to mount all of the garage door tracks and brackets to. You can pre-paint the plywood before installing it. Plan ahead and leave room on the studs so you can **** the drywall up against the plywood. If you try to bolt the tracks and brackets directly onto the drywall it will crush the drywall and you will be forever tightening hardware bolts as it crushes and it look like ****.

The previous owner of my house dry walled after the door was installed. This is not a ideal situation as the door at times bumps the edge of the drywall and it is splitting at the edge. I have been planning to ad a filler piece which will shim the door hardware into the garage to give better clearance.

I am not sure this is the correct thing to do but it makes sense. I will be following this thread to see what other responses you may receive

Thank you

I used OSB, but it will not make a difference what finished product you use. I did the OSB first, then wrapped the outside opening and the inside opening with aluminum coil stock to finish it off. To me it looks much cleaner and neater. Just make sure that there is sufficient wood underneath hto hold the track and opener.

The right thing to do is mount the door track, opener, etc. directly to wood. Plywood, osb, framing, whatever.

If there is drywall between the wood and the door hardware, the lags could work loose over time as the drywall loses integrity.

as others have said, door should be mounted to wood only, drywall up to the wood .
I would nail 2x4 or 2x6 on flat to the studs around the door opening to mount the hardware to.
previous poster capped with aluminum, I like that idea .

I put up 7/16" OSB first. I had a 2x4 on either side of the door for mounting the door track to and just put OSB up to it. I defiantly wanted the ceiling done before the door got put in.

Never mount door hardware to drywall !! For those that are going to say it's OK, you've just been lucky. Fastening back hangs and operator to ceiling with drywall is OK. Just make sure the lags are long enough.
