drywall finish; 45° taping knife or techniques

been trying to find a vendor/source for a 45% finishing blade.
have done the work with regular blades **** have never been satisfied with finish. its always close **** usually leaves a less than desirable finish.
any one with a proven method or tools to leave a finish like an inside/outside finish blade provides on 90% corners?

I'm not sure what a 45% blade is but my method is place mud on both sides of the corner evenly with a 4" knife, crease tape, lay tape in mud bed, smooth out tape with 4" knife, remove all excess, (first coat I usually use setting type mud)

2nd coat I use a corner knife (HD sells a nice little one about 2" wide on both sides) I try to just cover the tape with this pass ane fill the corner, cut back smooth.

3rd coat I use a 6" knife on both side trying not to fill right at the center but just smoothing the sides, I wipe this pass thoroughly with the knife to minimize sanding.

Some guys bed the tape on one coat, then do one side of the corner on the 2nd and the other side of the corner on the 3rd.

Another good tip for premix compound is despite the directions saying not to mix the mud is to mix it and add 1/2 ounce Dawn dish detergent, this minimizes pinholes.

You can also use lightweight compound for the last coat to make sanding easier (lightweight compound is very soft when dry and easily sratched until it is painted)

He's looking for a tool to finish off a 45* corner like one does with the 90* inside corner tool.

Here's the deal: lots of tapers make their own specialty tools. Not enough 45* corners in the world to justify making a 45* corner tool.

If it were me, I'd just take a couple of wood handle knives and screw them to a home made bracket. I'll make you one out of plywood for 50 bucks.

BTW, that's $45 for figuring out what the hell you were talking about and 5 bucks for the bracket.

i have attempted the other methods many times and have toyed with making my own. **** age is making me "less" enthusiastic!

Do you know someone with a bending break?
Just get a 10" knife with a removable handle an have it bent
or set up your own small bending station with some vice grips, the edge of a workbench and a piece of steel and bend one yourself

Just bend it a little less than a 45 so when you wipe the corner the mud doesn't hump out at the edges

apparently i didn't look hard enough for web sites. i found an adjustable version that will let me adjust the angle. and for less than 20$!
i also want to say thanks for the Bending Brake idea. i even have one sitting on the shelf for small jobs like this **** being the lazy type the 20$ version will make it easier/quicker for more cervasa time!

Not that it's a big deal but if you press alt+0176, you can get the little "degree symbol" at the end of your number. i.e 45° It takes all of the confusion out of the post.

Start->programs->accessories->system tools->character map

Make a paper or thin cardboard mockup of what you want, and take it to a sheet metal shop. They can cut and fold you any degree of bend you want in it. You can also have them spot weld a handle on it while you're at it.

Frankly, i didnt even realize i used the percentage symbol until you just pointed that out.
good thing i know how to use a hammer instead of keyboards!

Alt 0176 does all kinds or weird things, but no degrees symbol. Yes, Character map is one way, but too much trouble. I thought everyone knew * was degrees after a number.

My method is go to liquor store and buy a liter of Korbel Brandy and start drinking and laying the mud on with a 4 inch as described above. god I hate mudding etc.

On a Mac, you can just hold down the "fn" and "alt" keys and hit the zero, and get a degree symbol.

I just use a regular drywall knife to push it into the corner. I would also caulk the corner after texture for good measure. Doing the ceiling above the corner is a *****.

Wow..overcomplicated! Just get some of the tape with metal backing, fold it to the angle of the knewall and you are good to go. Very simple and very clean knee wall or non 90deg angles. Or just don't take knee walls. Just score the back and split the drywall and do the joints 2' above and below the knee wall.

The character map lists the alt codes for all the characters, so you just need to write down the altcode for the character you want, then when you need it, just type the altcode.

btw Ø = alt+0216 thats another handy one
