I'm getting ready to drywall my garage 32x48x12 what's the Pros & Cons of a smooth finish vs. rolled texture. I'm swaying toward the smooth probably cost an additional $500.00, I like some opinions.

Smooth is way easier to clean. Texture will hold dust and dirt more.

I take it you hired someone to do the sanding on this? If so, he should make it smooth anyways when he sands it. It looks like he's wanting to take the easy way out by offering you a discount so he doesn't have to sand.

If you did hire someone, and it is all mudded and taped, and FAIRLY smooth now, what about getting a pole sander and sanding it yourself and possibly save some money? Just a suggestion.

But just my personal preference, I would go smooth. It's easier to put stripes on if you decide to do that now or later. With texture, you would have problems with paint bleeding under the tape. Also with a texture, spider webs tend to hang on better and don't wipe off as easy. And you will have spiders.

Bottom line is.....it's your garage and what do YOU prefer? You'll get mixed reviews on here and it will be 50/50 as to what people like, so you'll have to decide for yourself anyways.

Oh and another thing.........

+1 Smooth easier to clean.

Smooth also means the taping/mud work was done right (or it will show every mistake). Texture sometimes is a short cut to cover mediocre work.

I can't stand texture, and repairing sections of wall that are already textured is a PITA.

Having a smooth wall would be easier to clean than textured, but for me I think the textured wall would look more modern. Have more character.

I vote for textured.

Smooth walls! I did these by myself and really did not spend much time sanding. If you ever watch a pro crew doing it they also do not sand much. The goal is to not sand. I ended up covering the entire wall with mud. Starting with a 8" knife on the seams and tape then to a 12" knife on the rest. Smoothing out and tapering all the mud. The areas I had to sand were mostly the drops of mud. It was still a lot of work with over 1500 sf of drywall. I had the office and guest room done by a pro crew and have to say my drywall turned out better.:)

Smooth with semi-gloss white paint.. Nice and bright, easy to clean if you ever want or need to...

While I put up 1/2" plywood walls in my old shop because I wanted to not have to worry about holes or where I could mount cabinets etc., I recently found out that my old house (which I am renovating and hope to sell soon) will not pass inspection because of the wooden walls and no fire barrier between the walls and the structural part of the building. So with that, I will either need to;
Hope that I get a lenient/blind inspector ... Or
Put up sheet metal on the walls ... Or
Put up sheet rock either over the plywood or remove the plywood an install on the studs...
Or
?????

Not sure what I'm going to do just yet...
The laws in your area may differ from mine..
Check to see what is code would be the best advice I could give..

Just finished my garage a couple months ago with smooth walls. I chose smooth for 2 reasons: way easier to keep clean and dust-free, and I am ocd and couldnt get the technique down for textured plaster lol

Even if you never clean your walls (have you ever cleaned walls?), the textured surface will allow dust/dirt to settle on all the upward facing surfaces. It will get dingy looking right away.

Go smooth.

I have always finished the drywall in the house or shops smooth. I like it smooth and gives me a great feeling of satisfaction to have it that way.nancy (for the most part) likes the smooth look, but in her shop wanted it textured on the walls. This was after I finished it all smooth. Tried to talk her out of it,but its her shop so texture it is. I will say that after a year and a half,it isnt dirty or dusty though. If you do have it done smooth, it will show you how good your finisher really is. Most finishers wont do a smooth finish on board that the home owner hangs, and rightly so. Anyway,I'd go smooth, look at it,then decide to texture some, all,or none of it. In our bedroom I did knockdown on the lower3'and separated it from the top with a chair rail. You cou;d do a wall stripe in knock down and paint it a different color, that would be a real stand out imo.

I did my garage like the house, smooth. I have already had to do some patching and it was a nice not having to **** around with the texture gun.

I did smooth with high gloss exterior paint.....

I used a heavy knap roller which gave it a 'slight' texture....just enough to high all the fu's.

As for the debate of drywall vs plywood vs nothing...personal preferance....having had a garage with at 1st just bare studs = magnet for dust and spider webs...to an upgrade with plywood = less dust, poor light reflection and not really any better at holding stuff than drywall.....to a new garage with drywall....absolutly no regrets.

Side note....never have seen the reason for painting strips or worring about what the wall is made off....in a real garage, you have the walls covered anyway with cabinets and 'stuff'....

Pretty walls are kind of like a troffy wife....great to look at but they don't do any work.

edit....case in point....look at Jack Olsen's garage....hard to tell if he has any walls....

Smoooove

And as been posted, properly mudded/taped needs VERY little sanding. To the point that one of those suzy homemaker sponge mops usually takes care of what little "edge" work thats needed to blend 3rd/final coat of mud.I know one thing, would way prefer DW down the rd when making changes.....its pretty darn easy.Best of luck,BW

My thoughts exactly. Assuming your shop is used for more than just drinking beer and watching football, a textured wall will collect lots of dirt!

I've been planning on doing a texture on mine, you guys that say it will get dirty faster and look dingy. My last machine shop was nicely finished similar to the way the inside of a house would be finished. I liked it!

I painted it in a high quality easy to clean paint, maybe that made a difference. Although I think I only really cleaned when something blew and shot stuff all over the shop.

Don't buy that junk paint from the home centers if you want to be able to clean up messes, smooth or textured.
