I have a 24 x 30 garage with 2x4 trusses 24" on center. I've read that I can put up 1x3 furring strips 16" on center and hang 1/2 inch ceiling grade drywall on top of the furring strips. I'm looking for feedback if this a viable plan? I have also thought about going with 5/8 but I have some concerns about the added weight on the 2x4 trusses. If 1x3 furring strips is a good route, what size ring shank nail should I use to fasten them?

Thanks

Do you know who manufactured the trusses? You could contact them and give them the particulars of you trusses. They can give you the best answer. But, I can tell you trusses are usually designed to carry the "dead load" of the gypsum ceiling. And when trusses are placed 24"O.C. then 5/8" drywall is best since it will have less tendancy to sag. 1/2" gypsum has a dead weight of around 2 lbs per sq. foot. 5/8" is not dramatically heavier per SF. maybe a quarter to a half pound more per SF. Drywall manufacturers specify how far their products can span in ceiling conditions for best performance. So you can look them up online and get those answers pretty easily.

I'm sure the weight of the ceiling will be nothing for the trusses compared to the wind and snow loads they're designed for. Using furring makes for much easier drywalling regardless of drywall thickness; it's a nice wide target for your screws, not nails. Especially on a ceiling, screws offer greater holding power and will not pop later. With a screwgun it goes pretty fast, too.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, one of the previous owners had the garage built, so I don't know who manufactured the trusses. It sounds like 5/8 drywall on the furring strips is probably the best way to go.

I sold the 3 miata's and my complete sweater vest collection for a pristine 89 VW cabriolet with only 5k on the odometer.
