Hey folks,

I am going to put insulation and drywall over this space:

However, on either side of that center 2x6 there is no stud for me to screw in the ends of the drywall. I was going to cut a 2x4 and nail it in from the side so I could have something to attach the drywall to. Is this the right course of action?

Yep. Either put in a nailer like you said or cut the drywall so the ends will hit the existing studs.

Why not cut it off and drywall past it?

The 2x6 is actually three of them stacked on top of each other and I believe is a support member. I can't go behind it or cut it.

I'd do a poly vapor barrier as well.

The insulation I have is kraft-faced, is that good enough or do you mean put the poly on the exterior wall side? That seems more trouble than it is worth.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was measuring for drywall this weekend and saw there is a cavity behind that horizontal brown board. It is almost like hardboard but flimsier and has texture. The drywall won't be flush if I install over the board, it will kick out about 1/4 inch at the bottom. I thought about removing it but it runs between two sandwiched 2x6s in the center and sandwiched 2x4s at the end.

What is it and can any part of it be removed?

add a peice to that area and drywall on it. Also, i would add pieces of 2x4 perpendicular to the studs as support points. then take a pix of where they are. Some day you might add tire storage or something else in that area and need something to bolt to. lot easier and cheaper to do it now.
