Howdy,i was looking at renting a drywall lift from HD,for 198.00 per week i feel im better off buying one ,i saw some on Kijiji for 100.00 -175.00 ,the one i found used for 100.00 was new in box, said it holds up to 120Lbs, i cant afford to buy all the osb for ceiling all at once so i figured buy my own lift use it and then sell it off, anyone else done this ,instead of renting one? just curious to hear some input on this.Seems like a no brainer to me....win win situation.

Sounds correct. Harbor freight sells them brand new for around the price of that 1 week rental as well. If you dont want to take chances on a used one that may be an option as well. You can always also resale the harbor freight one when finished too.

I would but then take your time and sell when done for half of what you paid.

I bought one thinking the same thing. Then you can take you time and the price you can buy one is almost the same as the rental.

Try some where else to rent Home depot is expensive. My go to place to rent charges 60 bucks a week for a drywall hoist. I've checked there prices for renting on other equipment and they where really high.

My home depot will match any other place around here. As long as it is the 'same' thing, to the guys here a '36" trencher is a 36" trencher'. They don't care about brands, etc.

Worth asking. Also my HD is about 30 minutes closer than the other rental places.

Make sure the lift you buy has an extension long enough to reach your ceiling. I chose one capable of reaching a 15 foot ceiling. My plan was to sell it when my garage ceiling was done, but I ended up doing another house and lifting two hanging heaters into position with it.

I got my $120 worth, even if I donate it to Habitat.

And then I'll got to Habitat and get it for $50. :)

OP lives in Canada, so no go on a Harbor Freight up there. Try Princess Auto, I've been in a few but not sure if they have these lifts. They're somewhat similar to HF in the states.

Don't ask.
I bought one off E-bay several years ago. It's been used on half a dozen jobs. I have had to make some minor repairs but it makes the job a lot easier, especially working alone.

I did this when I finished my basement. When I was done the lift has been passed around to friends and friends of friends. I just asked for some beer in rental payment and cases of beer kept showing up for a couple of years.

I have no idea who is currently storing the lift, it's been a few years since I had a beer delivery :headscrat I guess I need to ask around.

I vote buy one whether it be new or used. My brother picked up a used one, not sure on the price anymore, but it was a decent enough deal. He had a master bedroom with 10 foot ceilings, and a utility room to hang drywall. He and my dad also share a pole barn divided down the middle that they will use it to hang metal for a ceiling. I will likely borrow it to hang the ceiling in my building. I know at least one of his friends has borrowed it to hang drywall. So they are SUPER handy. If you rent it you have to get everything done in the week you have it. Buying allows you to work little by little as you can afford. In the end sell it and likely end up not exceeding the cost of a super cheap one week rental.

I did the same thing...bought a 12' lift off Amazon. used it to hang my garage ceiling, and then sold it for $50 more than I paid. Hanging the ceiling took longer than I expected, ( Doesn't EVERYTHING garage-related take longer than expected?). Rental expense would have killed the budget.

I bought mine for $130 on Amazon, and I've had offers to buy it from me for at least that much. I don't plan on selling it, still have a few ceilings to do and I'm always finding more uses for it.

I would definitely buy one rather than renting.

The rental lifts will be of higher quality and will operate more smoothly, but this is one case where, in my opinion, a "good enough" import will do the job.

I wouldn't recommend the import for a pro, however
