Any luck with anything on the less expensive side?

I'm ready for primer, but I haven't a clue what to use. Prices vary from $35 to $85 and more for five gallons. Input please.

I just got Bear, it was $55 for a 5 gallon bucket at HD not too much $$ and does a good job... Plan on using more primer than paint by the way.

Funny you asked about this.

I just purchased some Glidden PVA Drywall Primer and Sealer at Home Depot. There was a recent price reduction and the price is now about $8.50 a gallon - and even less if you buy a 5 gallon tub. It is recommended for new drywall.

We used Kilz2-two coats and then one cover coat of a premium exterior semi-gloss and we have a great paint coating in the garage. Interestingly-if you buy Kilz2 in the 2 gallon pails, it is cheaper per gallon than in 5 gallon pails-and easier to dinspense and stirr.

But you want inexpensive to begin with and Kilz is not that..

Not sure of the brand name, but it was at WallyWorld. 5 gallons bucket for like $55.00. Worked like a charm.

I'll second the PVA idea. I've been through almost 15 gallons among all the projects. Home depot will tint it for you. It's cheap and it really seals it. I think it helps the topcoat(s) to lay down very consistently.

I was a painting contractor for twenty years and the best Drywall primer/ sealer I ever used was PPG's 6-2. It was mid range price. Its best property is the blending or bringing togeather of the paper and the joint cmpd. It has excellent adhesion but no stain hiding qualities, can be used over existing painted surfaces.

Two coats will give you an eggshell or satin finish. I have finished commercial garages with it as a cost savings, then repaint 5 to 10 years down the line with whatever top coat latex or oil that you desire.

Glidden from HD. $7/gallon in a 5G bucket. Its absolutely needed, especially if you are going gloss. Otherwise, the gloss won't flatten out, and it'll take 4 coats to make it right.
