drywall screw gun

All,
I had the drywall delivered this week and am now looking to purchase a good drywall screw gun.
Any recommendations?

The stack of drywall looks intimidating....much more so than the stack of 2x6 lumber was before I had walls...go figure.

I had a stack about that big for my basement. I just used a cordless drill and a drywall screwhead adaptor. It's slower then a screwgun but works just as good. Plus I didn't spend $100.00+ on a gun I'll use once. But if you want to get one, Senco is good.

I used the senco to hang my drywall. About 20 sheets 5/8 and 35 sheets 1/2. Corded version. Used the 1 5/8 and 1 1/4 screws. I liked the gun alot, but keep an impact handy for driving a few the rest of the way. I had purchased the milwaukee screw gun years ago because it was on clearance for like $35. I did not use it. Had purchased the senco during building for screwing down the decking so I just purchased the screws for the drywall.
By the way rent a lift for those 80lb pieces of drywall. Made it much easier to install. I also wish I had one of those 6ft rolling scaffold. I use 2 ladders and a 2x12 but it would have been nice.

If you haven't checked Craigslist for one yet, I would do so especially if you won't use it again. I see them going for around $50 every so often. Home Depot has a Ridgid for $80. Lowe's has a DeWalt for $80 as well.

I use a Senco screwgun that uses the screws on plastic strips. It was worth the money if you have a lot of drywall to hang.

i have the ridgid they sell at depot. i have no complaints about it, other than i didnt like the bit it came with. after getting the depth setting dialed in it worked well.

but i agree that with that much drywall, and ceiling work the colated guns would be my weapon of choice. id look for a used one, but have heard ok things about the lower end models

Just use a good cordless drill...variable speed....with a drywall bit on the end...

+1 on the Rigid corded Collated Screwgun for $80, I just bought one last week and that thing is awesome. Depth setting is easily adjustable, fires them in just about as fast as you can pull the trigger, great warranty....well worth the money.

I have the Milwaukee. Its ok. It gets used for other things like decking but if i was getting a pure drywall screwdriver id get the Makita. Having used one id say its superior I think the model was the 6825?. Plus it has a metal depth guide which seems better than the plastic on m Milwaukee.

On the upside, my Milwaukee was made in the states. If that factors into your decision (it did mine)

Bought a milwaukee 18v lithium bat combo pack with drill & impact driver for $200 from amazon. It is great set for drywall. Don't forget You won't be done when the garage is. And nothing is better looking than red tool boxes on the bench!

Pawn shops around here always have a couple to choose from for $50 or less. For one time use you should be fine.

If you buy new go for the highest RPM -- Makita makes a nice one. The DeWalt HD deck versions are nice too.

If you can get a good one on CL for $50 or so, grab it, but I bought the HF one for $30 w/o coupon a few years back. It has a cord, but it worked great for me. I did all the drywall on my 20x32 garage. Also, it uses the senco coallated screws.

I have a Dewalt $$ and a HF $39. Can't really tell any difference between them. The HF may turn a little faster. Buy a good bit to use in either one. The bits that come with them are junk.

FYI - Went by Tractor supply today and they have $50 off the 6' rolling scaffold. $149! 4/14 - 4/18. Also got the lawn sprayer, the big 200 lb tow spreader on sale. Picked up the 25 gallon deluxe sprayer!

I second the Senco with the strips of screws in the plastic. Cut down on my time quite a bit. I figure I'll use it again if I ever build a deck or help my dad build a deck, etc. There's never a good reason not to buy a tool!

If you are going to be doing other projects like a deck, more drywall, etc I would highly suggest one of the quick drive systems. I bought one while building my house and it has been well worth the investment. So far have used it to screw tile backer board down, install some drywall, screw the entire sub-floor of my house and am getting ready to build a deck where I will use it to screw the decking down.

I just finished my 25x30' garage sheetrock walls, ceiling, and plywood attic.

I bought a harbor frieght gun for ~20 with a coupon and it did a great job. As mentioned you need to buy good bits ($5?) but it works fine.
