I've only ever used the knives when doing drywall. When would you use a trowel? I'm not talking about those corner ones, the big flat ones.

Can't stand seeing a tool for sale and not knowing what it's used for :bounce:

You will find plaster guys and rockers from Newfoundland use trowels the most. I use one quite a bit as I learned masonry first, I find it more comfortable for the final coats.

I bought a trowel but I didn't like the feel of it. I went back to using the knives. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance to grow on me.

The best plasterer I know, and he's excellent, uses both. 5" knife, 8" knife, 12" trowel, 20" knife. He doesn't know why, he just does.

Many drywall trowels have a slight arch in the middle, so you can a little extra mud at the joints. The mud does shrink a small amount.
