For residents of SE Michigan who are customers of DTE Power Company, I just got a clarification that might be of use.

I asked what the procedure was for pulling a meter at a location that has a smart meter.

It is this:

Call their main number at least an hour before the proposed disconnect to let them know you are pulling the meter. Allow a little extra time to account for heavy call times. Tell them how long you expect to have it disconnected and call them when it is reconnected. They will do it for you for a fee. And they will suggest you do that unless you let them know you are capable of doing it yourself.

If you pull a smart meter without notifying them, they will send a crew out to make repairs and will charge you.

Bill,
The other method that the son used to change his entire panel out without dte knowing. We had a power outage up here. He jumped on it and pulled the meter. Got the service exchanged, new panel before the power came back on. They never knew it was pulled. Now, they just came by my place and exchanged the meter. Old meter wasn’t calling in to report. Cell service ***** up here.
