dual 80 broken already

heres the scoop, my snappy dealer opened it up and replaced everything inside yesterday. he said nothing was out of the ordinary but he did mention the gap around the gear. he said there was more gap then usual (possibly misscut or milled?)

so he puts it back together and gives it a few spins both ways. all checks out fine. when i am walking back into the shop i am playing with it some more and the damn thing locked up again but this time it wouldn't spin both ways. he opens it again and does some poking around and put it back together.


not sure what you guys think but i think this one is a lemon. the identical shlf80 at work has not failed yet except the screws come out of the head so we locktited them in

Broke mine last Monday. Called them and they sent me two replacement head kits by that friday!!!

As a working mechanic since '71, and a tightwad by the way, I would never use a ratchet to break exhaust nuts or any nuts for that matter! I am surprised that nobody mentioned this! If you don't have power tools buy a 1/2" breaker bar! I learned this in mechanic school 40+ years ago, don't always blame it on the tools. I worked hard to buy the best (Snapon) and my family probably would have preferred that I spent less money on my tools but I put two children thru college using my snapon tools! I have ratchets from the '70s that look like the day they came off the trk. If I was your toolman I wouldn't honor an abused tool.

you listen to me. i know this is not a breaker bar and should not be used in such a matter but this ratchet is designed for 300+ ft lbs. a breaker bar is also 300+ ft lbs. at what point should it be switched from ratchet use to a breaker bar? you can put your cheater pipe over your breaker bar and do the same damn thing and you want my warranty voided for using this in a 100-150ft lb situation laying on my back with a ratchet crammed between a frame rail and my ribs?

Then dont produce ratchets with long handles if they cant take the leverage. Pretty damned simple. These companies know exactly whats going to be done with their $200.00+ 2 foot long 1/2" ratchets. Sure as hell isnt being purchased just to have 2ft of reach in 1/2" drive but but god forbid you pull on it.

Are these pemium tools that can take the abusive environment they're expected to be used in every day or not? If not then everyone can just buy from HF.

the tools are designed to take the abuse. if they don't hold up the company would go bankrupt when it has to replace every tool they sold multiple times until the replacements outweigh the sales.

I thought the same, but I stand by the opinion that impacts are the only way to go for exhaust work.

Sometimes you just want to take your tool/engine/stereo/etc/etc right up to REDLINE just so you know it can handle it and you can rely on it in the future to preform like the manufacturer claims. Once it's proven itself to you ya can baby it if ya don't like pushing it to the limit but it's good to know it can preform like expected when you need it to. The op said he figured he had about 125 ft. lbs. on it which isn't abuse.
Anyone who hasn't taken their toys to redline just ain't livin life to the fullest imho.

thats what I do.

Have you taken the ratchet apart yourself to see if the parts are installed correctly or have you just made YouTube videos of the problem?

i took it apart further and found nothing wrong and put it back together. it was still broken after handing it to my dealer. we'll just have to see if there was a problem with the parts inside or the ratchet head tolerances are out of spec.

Keep us posted on how things get resolved; any pics of the inside of the head with the parts removed? As you said before; maybe the head was not machined correctly to begin with. I got a 1/2" ratchet directly from snap-on and it jammed from the get go; they sent me a new one.

"You listen to me " I did listen to you on your You Tube video, you said you only used it turning a crankshaft and then broke two exhaust manifold bolts, that was the lead in of your video! If you weigh 200 lbs and apply that force, enough to snap two exhaust manifold bolts, to a 2 ft long 80 gear ratchet that is certainly more than 120 ftlbs! And by the way putting a reply in bold print with the words "you listen to me!" doesn't intimidate me.

Why not just say **** the dealer, and call snapon?
