Dual Air Compressors

My wife bought me an IR Garage Mate air compressor for Christmas. It's a nice compressor that is 2HP and puts out 5.2 CFM and is portable and quite.

When I started it up it ended up having a pin hole in one of the welds on the tank. Ingersoll-Rand's customer service is great and when I called them about it they told me to drill another hole in the tank to render it inoperable and they would ship me a an entire brand new compressor. This means that I have the brand new pump and motor off the old one to do with what I please.

What I was thinking was that I could get a used 30 gallon tank off craigslist cheap and then hook the spare motor and pump up to that. Then connect the two outputs with a "T" and run it to my hose reel to basically get double the CFM and air storage. I already have multiple circuits running to my garage so I don't think load will be an issue. Also the IR pumps are rated for 100% duty.

Does this sound like a reasonable idea? Do I need anything else like a check valve? I know that I should probably set them to kick on at slightly different pressures.

that's the second IR tank leak we've heard of on here in as many weeks. anyway, that aside, if you couple the compressors together you have to plumb it to the pressure side of the regulators or else the reg that is set lower will keep bleeding air . and I think it would be good to have 1 set to start at 5 or 10 lbs lower than the primary compressor is set

Could you get the weld fixed after they send you the new unit ? Then I would tee the output air on the tanks together and get into the pressure switch on the one unit and turn down the cut in pressure down maybe 10psi. Now the one unit will fill 60 gal of air in low usage times and the second one will kick in when high demand is needed. The lower set one will kick out first and the factory set one will finsh the top up. I think that will work -Cheers
