Over the past few months I have been putting together a tool kit for my street legal CRF450x. I figured rather than post each new tools in the new tool thread I would wait and post them all in one. This is not a long distance around the world kit, it is for shorter weekend trips where I may need a quick fix to get me back home. I think the only tool I still need to add is a pair of Knipex mini bolt cutters and I need to find a tool roll that I like to keep everything in place. I am always open to suggestions for better tools. I wanted to keep this kit small with as few moving parts as possible. So here it goes...
Klein demolition 4" screwdrivers
CO2 pump and extra cartridges
Motion Pro tire irons with 22mm and 32mm axle nut wrenches
Zip ties, duct tape, safety wire
Knipex pliers wrench and alligators (both 7")
Williams stubby wrenches (8,10,12,17mm, 6mm non stubby)
Snap On 1/4" sliding t-handle, breaker bar, extension, 1/4 to 3/8 adapter
Williams 1/4" sockets (6,8,10,12mm)
Williams allen wrenches (3,4,5,6,8,10mm)
Motion Pro spark plug socket with swivel extension
Streamlight
Cycle gear spoke wrench
Tube patch kit (not shown)
Valve stem remover (Metal ones that are valve stem caps)
All packed into a Kriega 5L bag mounted to the rear fender

Nice kit! I have a list that I yank from my main box for my KLR 650 when I go out for more than a day trip. I typically put mine in a stick RodGuard and it rides in a pannier. I've been meaning to put together a dedicated kit though. I may steal a few ideas.

I think the only thing missing is a knife.

Something pry, strip wire, cut a hose, remove a branch, etc....

You could either choose a cheap knife or a Leatherman Rebar/Wave. It would add knives, and needle nose pliers, to the kit.

Why are you carrying both pairs of Knipex.

IMO A small Cresent and the Knipex Plier Wrench would be a better pair. Less handle to fiddle with and fits in a couple smaller places. Especially with the combo wrenches available

Lastly, Super Glue. Glue a hose, makeshift Loctite, close a wound, etc.... Even a small 1oz/2oz bottle goes a long way.

I must ask why the heavy, full size and thru-shank screwdrivers/?!!

Consideder adding hemostat for a UL version of needle nose plier

Nice kit tho, good luck with it :3gears:

(on medium to longer nav's i would second adding locktite, thread sealant/teflon tape, and some electrical repair stuff)

I carry my pocket knife in a camelbak with my phone and wallet so I do have that covered. I like the teeth on the Alligators and they are small enough that I feel I don't need needle nose and with the wrenches I dont feel the need for a small cresent wrench. I also carry a Leatherman Squirt with my pocket knife in case I need so pick out thorns or something. Super glue is in the small first aid kit in the camelbak. Its actually a 4 pack of the single use super glues. I was thinking about JB quick but I havent decided on that yet. Might be better if I crack a side case or something.

I like the idea of being able to use the screwdrivers to pry or beat on something if needed. Being in the desert it's always easy to find a rock to use as a hammer.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Keep them coming!

You should test your kit by usisng it and no other tools to do a basic maintenace routinge

- trouble shoot carb/FI mixture
- fix an elecrtical short / glitch circuit for e-start or lights/ dead battery/jump or kick
- change oil/filters
- coolant swap/hoseclamps/theromostat
- change tire

Provided you've done this and your tools work for you, I'd say good to go

Ride ending issues beyond these --

- cracked case (use guards tho), this is why people carry JP epoxy / liquidsteel stuff
- bent rotor (prevention easier than cure)
- fuel leak (thread sealant and check lines)
- air in brake lines/bleed brakes

It s a judgement call on when you need more stuff IMHO.

I'd say for rides where you can call for a pickup you don't to be as worried. For stuff beyon cellphone range or in terrain where a walk out is >4hrs (so, 10miles ish from a road), you want to start being more prepared with a bigger kit.

+1 on this - if you do you own maintenance you should have a good idea of what you need. Then work out of your tool kit to do the usual stuff in the future to identify what might need to be added or removed.

I carry an apex tip holder and assorted tips along with the t-handle and extension as my screwdrivers.

A small pair of vise grips is pretty versatile since it can clamp on and stay with zip-ties and safety wire (think cracked/broken shift levers).

You need a spare tube fender pack to carry an extra front tube - there are times where the tube may be too torn/mangled to patch, and many times it's quicker to swap the tube out and patch it later/back at home.

Another recommendation for a tube of the MSR quick steel or aluminum.

I forgot about the Crunch. I'll see about adding one. I have never seen one in person so I need to get my hands on one.

You still need small vise grips, electrical tape, JB weld, and a master link that matches your chain.

Curious if I was in a pinch why wouldn't duct tape work instead of electrical tape? #54

Electrical problems are such that its not worth finding out the hard way. especially if you're running nav system, extra lights, EFI and **** that is mission critical to getting home.

These.

I also carry wire, small dikes, stripper, & crimp connectors, Radiator stop-leak (if applicable), continuity tester or VOM, tow strap.

Lots of discussion in the AdvRider tools thread about people losing their fender-mounted kits. Put your name in it.

Leatherman, small crescent, folding metric hex key set, and 17mm socket and ratchet but I ride a BMW.

As far as other stuff: electrical tape, zip ties, and baling wire. I suppose I should probably add some tire repair stuff at some point as well.
