Ever since i really got into garages and creating a space of my own i've wanted a solid workbench. Well i think i've finally realized that vision. I've only ever had a work surface in the past as space was always at a premium. I've been doing a ton of research and playing with sizing and specs for several months and i finally closed on one last night as it was $50 off.

Its a really solid piece and being around $80 cheaper then the Gladiator one that i was also eyeing made it the right one. My plan was to have my little craftsman chest roll under it, and to my surprise the actual metal surface is identical. I'll post a better quality pic later but these will have to do for now.

Just playing around with the placement....

The hose bib presented a little hiccup in my vision as it was originally where i had wanted a tool box but i think having my table there with the open portion for my stool will make it perfectly functional for my needs.

And this side shows you the current bane of my existence.

Looking forward to the build.

I hated having the hose bib at the back as you are always having to snake the hose past everything in the garage to get it out to where its only ever needed. I relocated mine (used 3/4" pipe and a ball valve) to the FRONT of the garage. I was lucky that I could re-route it within the basement because of the house floor plan.

WAY more practical and I can hose down the neighbors house across the street if I ever needed to.

Good ol Crappy Tire. Great deals sometimes, that's always how I end up with big tools I wouldn't have bought otherwise (think thickness planer for $90, reg like $350, Welder for $130, reg $450). If you walk in there at the right time it can be better than hunting for used stuff. Bench looks great, I'm sure you'll appreciate the usable surface space.

That is ideal for sure.

Honestly they get a bad wrap for a variety of reasons; however i really like their pricing and return policies. Almost anything i want from there eventually goes on sale and with their online price alert feature it makes it super easy. Doesn't hurt that our new place is about 3 kms from one of their bigger locations.

dubber,

The new bench looks good (and solid). You picked the right color, and size.. the rolling tool box fits perfect. It's already starting to get that you look, and you've only got the one item. I'm sure you'll have more interesting stuff happening in the next month or so. :)

Did you pull the racedeck up form the last garage? looking forward to your updates!

It had been my intention to do so, however in the end it was left behind. Apparently the garage helped to clinch the deal for the buyer which I was very happy to hear. He originally wanted everything included but after some negotiations we settled on just leaving the floor.

Dubber, all that cardboard will be history before you know it.

And with your two-week garage work tour forthcoming, we're eager to see you continue working your proven garage magic!

Thanks man. I remember going through this to a much lesser degree when i was setting up my last place, it was driving me nutz. But these boxes are HUGE, especially from the new TV and the large furniture pieces.

I cut up and burn a lot of cardboard...

If only it were that easy, but since i'm within the city limits, its not only frowned upon but illegal. I'm about 2 blocks away from our nearest Fire Station which would no doubt be on site within a few minutes.

Just cut those boxes up into 1'x1' pieces with a box cutter and on the night before trash day start distributing ALL of those pieces in all your neighbor's cans. They almost certainly won't care if their cans aren't full and if you think they might just wait til late and do it.

Do you have natural gas plumbed into the garage? If so the natural gas garage heaters are not too expensive.

Yes sir i do actually. I'm toying with the idea right now, definitely not this year but next at the earliest. My father-in-law is insisting it will do more damage then good if i bring in a salt crusted vehicle during the winter and it gets heated continuously.

Love this idea. Unfortunately though with the amount i have i will won't get any sleep that night. Last night was garbage day thankfully. I was able to get rid of half my hoard.

In for this! Congrats again on the new place.

Thanks man.

More baby steps last night, i think this will become an ongoing theme. I took down a shelf from the GLI side of the garage. It was funny, as i was taking it down i was thinking maybe i should move this car out of the way. Did a couple more hangers, and then thought, yes, i would really regret this if it slipped out of my hand while taking down the last one :)

Can't wait to get a fresh start in there.

before shelf

after shelf

I may end up putting another shelf up there at some point but for now it had to go.

As i was working on the shelf i got a close-up look at the nasty window. I don't think it had ever cleaned, luckily its only a couple years old. Went at that and the result was a huge improvement. I'm thinking of putting up a film on that window for privacy eventually. Also mounted up my extension cord reel as well which has already been quite handy.

Today was garbage day thankfully so i was able to get rid of a "few" bags :) Cardboard next week can't come soon enough.

My other project last night was taking apart and getting rid of an ugly and rusty swing the PO left on the lawn, for us to enjoy? I took it all apart and even baggied all of the screws and bolts. I placed it across the street hoping someone may wish to collect it.

Went from this.....

To this....

They only collect recycle here every other week as well, but the hell if I could deal with that mess in my domain haha I'd be hauling it to the recycle drop off or to a supermarket!

Lots of open dumpsters in the Ottawa area.

Cut the cardboard up into manageable pieces that
will fit in your car and make a dumpster run.

Perhaps to that Canadian Tire near you.

He has a good point, and he may be right, but having a heater does not mean it has to be kept warm all the time. Do it now before you paint.... I have my heater setup to turn on at -5C (23F), and keep it from getting colder than that in the garage. When i am working in the shop I will turn it up.... Last winter I didn't have the heater I didnt get much work done when it was -40! It was even colder the winter before when the garage was not insulated...

Are you suggesting that I illegally dump? hahaha. I think i'll have to **** this up for another week.

Very nice, congrats! Got any pics of the rest of the house? I apologize if they were posted and I missed them.

Thank you!

Take the cardboard up into Gatineau park one fine evening,
start a fire in a fire pit and have a weenie / marshmallow roast.

Why let good cardboard go to waste? :)

Before Texas, I lived in Ottawa for 10 years... congrats on the
new place & garage!

Not sure what everyone is getting all excited about. There's very little you can do with a double...

LOL

I haven't yet had a chance to really examine the photos of your space. I want to take some time to really soak in the "Before" prior to seeing what you make of your blank canvas.

Also, I see you went with no CAPS. How could you do that to me?

My truck is outside and Leanne's suv is inside with my project car. When her suv is in the garage it will be -5 when it is colder outside and when I work in the garage i will pull her suv out to make room and heat the garage then. If you are leaving the daily driver in the garage and keeping it warm while you work then it maybe I could see a reason why a person would worry about too many wet and dry cycles with the salt on the vehicle... If I had a nice car and there was salt on the roads i would buy a beater but thats just me....

I just know that if you want to do a heater now is the time..... Having the option to work in the garage without gloves and a toque is nice right???
