Why are you even on this site? A site where people enjoy their tools and appreciate fine work. You sir, are the definition of a hack. Why don't you just sign out and not come back......

Jeez, obviously this guy has an appreciation for tools and old iron. If he bought the truck cheap and doesn't want to fix it properly that is his call. If the truck is on it's last leg, f-ing around fixing little things might be a waste of time.

Can you honestly say you have never pulled a half-assed repair to a machine that you knew was soon to be dead? I have.

You've got to admit: it takes a big pair of ******** to perform this repair and then advertise it to the world like this. It just screams "I don't care what you think."

I kind of like that.

Looks like he torched it, so good use of tools there

Come on, man! That would be silly! :lol_hitti No, I actually used a cold chisel.

This is clearly an example of an "aw F*** it" moment, when a machine is ******* you off, is on it's way out, and you don't want to screw with it.

Exactly. Also, I don't know how long you've had your signature like that, but that is hilarious!

I really appreciate that. Thank you.

anyone even bother to look at my link?

Here it is again

A Hack? I don't think so, just a man with a sense of humor.

Well that and a roll of duct tape that was going bad.

Not sure what to say, Banjo. Not my style, but I do appreciate the utter junkyard-or-demo-derby-ness of the job! I've seen factory and farm machinery repaired in similar ways, and it always pisses me off. As an engineer, I often am frustrated by an unnapproved modification to our machines or equipment made by our maintenance shop. But given the quality of your machine, and the scenario, you get a pass!

That would be awesome, even better put like a piano hinge or home door hinge on it. That would be so ghetto and cool at the same time!! :spit::)

And posted pics of it on a site like this? It wouldn't have taken any longer to fix the damn latch than to "fix" it like that...... Hack.

Some call it ghetto, a hack, or cheap. Others see it as functional and that's all that counts. Image is overrated for trucks.

It's what's gotta be done on a budget(none). I have seen far worse. Wood block for spring, gas filler neck holding on bed, rope to operate windshield wipers, gasket sealer for windshield, bondo or fiberglass to cover missing sheet metal, and the list goes on. It's not the proper repair, nor is it recommended, but eh.....its a cheap truck, what do you expect?

bond and fiberglass dont work as well as jiffy foam, it keeps the cold out but if you use too much it pops the whole door panel off then you have to cut the foam down and use more foam and some wood screws to hold it on. ask my dad. he loved that datsun to death. i think he was in depression the morning that he hit the bump and his gas tank fell out of the bottom of the car. it was its time. p.s. he was a 10year industrial mechanic at that time.

I don't see anything wrong with it.Of course I've taken the box liner out of a truck, cut a flap out of the box floor over the fuel tank so I could change the fuel pump.Box liner covers the hole.

Does anyone remember or seen that thread wasn't on this forum but
the guy had a flat tire and had one lock nut per wheel and couldn't find the key so he used a sawall to cut the aluminum rim off and ended up with many pieces of aluminun rim and a hub with one lock nut on it :bounce:

Guys,

I think you're being a little rough on Banjo. We've all made mistakes, had bad days, and done things we wished we hadn't. And, we've all said things on threads we wished we hadn't. Banjos original premise is right... Duct tape is a useful tool. So let's give this thread a rest. No sense in piling on.

Ya, but I don't think Banjo classifies this as any of the above...:lol_hitti

mj,

I hear what you're saying and you may be right, but there's no reason to crucify the guy. I think he was just sharing his thoughts and everyone jumped to DEFCON4.

I had a buddy in the late '70's, and he and two friends each went out and bought themselves junker vehicles, and drove them everywhere they went. They got into an informal competition...each trying to spend the least money for ever-junkier POS vehicles, and yet still be able to keep them on the road. They eventually had themselves a little informal contest going, complete with rules made up over too-many beers.

For example, any repairs HAD to be done in the cheapest and worst possible "shadetree" fashion, and then they would proudly show each other their shoddy and cheapo workmanship. They laughed and laughed at each other, and constantly tried to "out-cheap" each other...even though all three of them could afford nicer cars. They proudly pointed out cords showing through their bald tires, parking lights dangling from wires (still working, of course), missing mirrors, bumpers held in place only by baling wire, etc. Then several times over about a month-long period they got out drinking and started chasing each other around town, sideswiping each others' cars, bumping each other at lights, etc. :3gears: Always careful not to do enough damage to disable each other's cars (which would have brought the cops)

Eventually they got tired of changing flat tires, getting "unsafe vehicle" warning tickets, and breaking down all over town. But for a while there, they were having a ball. They LIKED hacking their POS junkers together; they thought it was hilarious. :spit:

I'll bet ol' Banjo felt the same way. Otherwise he wouldn't have bothered to post it. No one could possibly think that he thought this would have been the proper way to repair a nice vehicle with a stuck hood latch...or a customer's car. Lighten up, gang! It's pretty funny, if you look at it that way. :bounce:

And just for the record, my 3 buddies were in a major city in Ohio...not Appalachia or any other "stereotype" places.
