Ducted system filters

Thick pleated filters seem to be installed a lot on new systems. One claim I saw was 6 months life and 1 month for the cheapo 1" filters that used to be standard. The cheap ones don't filter nearly as well but the pleated ones are more costly. Thinking I will go with an electrostatic air cleaner for the house. We have one now and it seems to work well. But wondering what to do for the shop - don't expect to do much that would generate a lot dust. And not sure what the garage heater uses. Currently looking at a Lennox LF24-30 for that.

I usually grab a MERV 7 or 8 filter, depending whats on sale. I can see my filter so I keep some on hand and once they start to look like they are getting full then I will change them out. I decided to go that route vs one of the cheaper filters to try and keep as much dust out of the furnace as possible. We just doing car maintenance then they barely seem to accumulate anything, we I start doing any wood working, I usually replace them at the end of the weekend.

4in pleated filters work pretty good. They last longer and help with airflow. Not too expensive also (merv 8.)
